Weekend Confirmed 161 - Nintendo Direct, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
by Ozzie Mejia, Apr 19, 2013 1:15pm PDTHost Garnett Lee is on a boat and Jeff Cannata is coming back from NASA, so that means it's another early Friday morning recording for Weekend Confirmed. This week, the founder of 2N1Team is joined by his former Totally Rad Show co-host, Dan Trachtenberg, along with "Indie" Jeff Mattas and Nikole Zivalich. They kick the show off with a recap of this week's Nintendo Direct before diving into Dark Souls and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Also, Nikole Z didn't want to leave listeners on the edge of their seats, so she concludes her Storytime this week on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. And as always, the crew sends everyone into the weekend with a new round of Finishing Moves.

No Nintendo press conference at E3 this year.
Microsoft announcing their new console well before the show.
Is it finally time that the games industry let the bloated, archaic, inefficient and wasteful masturbatory exercise that is E3 die off?

Not surprised. Bad management will do that to a company. This kind of culling and reshuffling is only buying time. I'll know EA is ready for a turn-around when Gibeau is kicked out the door.
I know all you WiiU owners out there are in dire need of games, this one is worth your time and money.

Likewise with the recent update to Skyrim I tried to go back to it and the combat in that (which if we face it has never been a high point of that series) let me down considerably and I could not get into at all.
Dark Souls and a reintroduction of Monster Hunter into my life have effectively broke me for other melee games. This is probably what huge FPS players always talk about when they mention the shooting doesn't feel right.
I appreciate it, but don't love it.
My fighting games of choice are Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter and Soul Calibur. You know, the really detail-oriented, deep fighting games that intimidate a lot of people, but suck others (like me) into a black hole of competition and self-improvement, where every match is an opportunity to learn new tricks, experiment with new strategies, and test your reflexes, timing and tactics.
That said, I think that what NetherRealm is doing with the fighting genre is absolutely where it needs to go in order to recapture the kind of excitement and energy it had in the 90s. The cinematic presentation, the deeper story-modes, and just the feeling of being a badass are all great. I hope the developers of those fighting games I listed are taking notes and thinking up ways to combine the cinematic, badass presentation (in gameplay) with the depth and attention-to-detail they are known for.

Face it FF7 is one of the 3 greatest stories gaming has ever had. It's one of the richest universes gaming has created, and will remain a icon for years to come.
FF7 has a incredibly focused narrative based on revenge from several sides. It also carries actual MATURE THEMES underneath that story that discuss the global expansion of corporation that polute our planet all for profits. It also provide a race war being fought against the wutai, and a race that was exterminated ala (native Americans). Plus a great twist that puts bioshock to shame. All this in a rich steam punk universe that has so much history to mine even still.
For all the hate which is laughable FF7 stands as the first truly modern story told, as the press and gamers embrace that. Don't hate just because its popular which is so common from our fans.

The SNES original was the very first game I played. Still one of my favourite games :)
I'm now considering buying a 3DS because of it, DK and Pokemon X & Y.

Going into the game this way I was exploring, discovering aspects of items/world/enemies that fascinated me, and creating interesting side quests. It was a blast and I realized that if I was following the wiki from the start I'd be focusing too much on what the community says I "should do" and not what's fun for me.

It's a more lighthearted view of the space station and it's crew.
I think you guys are forgetting the obvious here. People have been pirating the shit out of this game for years. The crazy Earthbound fans already know the game inside and out ten times over and are going to buy it anyway because they can, as am I.
I played it as recently as a couple years ago around the time when the Mother 3 fan translation was released, and it totally holds up. In fact, I feel like I got way more out of it replaying it as a grownup than I did when I was young.

Seriously, everyone reading this, go to www.blendogames.com and click on Gravity Bone. It's free and it'll take 20-30 minutes of your time, and it will fundamentally alter how you see narrative in games. Then play the "sequel" 30 Flights of Loving (not free, but cheap on Steam). You can play them both in under an hour. So fun, so fresh, and completely non-pretentious.
Otherwise, really enjoyed this one. I have really enjoyed Dan's takes the couple times he has been on. Always glad when he, Jeff Mattas, or Nicole make an appearance.

Rue isn't pronounced ru-ay in French either. It's pronounced rrrr-u.
Also Rue in French means "road"

If anyone is interested, here's the first episode:

I'm sure the links will break, but compare a screenshot of Gemeni Rue with Maniac Mansion on the C64 (a real 8-bit machine) for instance. Gemeni Rue is much closer in fidelity to what was produced on the 16-bit machines, like the Amiga. The difference is huge. We're talking about something like a 10 year improvement in graphics, roughly 80s vs 90s.
Gemeni Rue (PC):

vs Maniac Mansion (C64):

vs Beneath a Steel Sky (Amiga):

I know Jeff knows better, but I've heard "8-bit" misused SO many times now from different people.
