Capcom looking at 'more and better' single-player in fighting games

Fighting games are chiefly about punching your friend in the face, but the new Mortal Kombat and, oh my goodness, Persona 4 Arena have really worked at big single-player sides too. While Capcom is arguably still best at friend-punching, it's really fallen behind in offering more. Thankfully, that may be changing in the not-so-near future.

P4A and Mortal Kombat have story modes with fully-voiced voiced cutscenes and character arcs and whatnot, and MK in particular has oodles of various single-player modes. Capcom's series like Street Fighter, however, have followed the same pattern for yonks: trade textual one-liner; fight man; insult loser with a sentence of text; move on to next opponent; ultimately defeat boss who was doing something which was under-explained but probably naughty.

Capcom's not unaware of this, though.

"The strategic marketing group here has for quite a while been pushing for our fighting franchises to have more and better single player content, of which full fledged story modes are one component," Capcom USA senior VP Christian Svensson wrote in response to a fan.

The forum poster had praised NetherRealm Studios for the story mode, challenges, and so on in Mortal Kombat and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Don't hold your breath though.

"How and when those requirements manifest in our future roadmap, I'm not prepared to speak about at this time," Svensson added. And one arm of Capcom pushing for something doesn't mean everyone else is onboard.

While other fighting games do offer better single-player, Capcom's still the multiplayer favorite. One imagines it'll be very careful in expanding the solo side, and not risk losing its crown.

I'd just like to see better single player AI that didn't involve impossible moves and what always feel like cheating or cheap-shot tactics.

When fighting Seth, I had a moment where I countered a jump with a medium dragon punch. He landed before the animation completed, got up and countered my dragon punch with one of his own. BUUUUUUUUUULLLLL SHIT

it is a tough problem. initial sales are driven mostly by casual players who care about this sort of thing, but a games longevity is almost entirely determined by its acceptance in the competitive scene that doesn't give 2 shits about story mode. comes down to where you want to spend resources i guess.

Those so-called cutscenes barely pass for slideshows, let alone "cartoons."

They could make it DLC so that way people that want it can buy it, and the people that don't want it can complain that they made a DLC they don't want.

Just copy MK9's Story and Challenge Tower modes, and you've got a sale from me. Just admit that the West did something you never could for fighting games, and we'll all be better off for it.

I actually think of Tekken: Dark Resurrection and Soul Caliber 2 when I think if awesome fighting game single player. They both had multiple modes to play, cool gear and costumes you could acquire for your fave character (as opposed to nickel/diming you for costume packs), cool rendered cut scenes to reward you for completion, surprise characters you can earn by doing certain things with certain characters with certain stages. Most people have told me they like everything unlocked from the get-go. I might be in a slim minority, but i always liked the idea of being rewarded with items/weapons/gear for putting time into the game and coming back to it.

And a little extra story couldn't hurt.

I really liked the MK9 story design (i.e. different characters) but even on normal, learning each character quickly and not getting face stomped got to be a chore. :(

I'm a fan of the arcade-like minimal story. I don't really care how Ryu and Blanka met in college.

Ryu was surprisingly extroverted in his frat house days. I guess unemployment changes people.

Still waiting for Street Fighter II HD PC release, on Steam. And fix the damn Sagat stage music so it doesn't suck compared to the original.

I'd just be happy if they removed the flashing "PRESS START" thing up in the 2P corner when I play by myself. So annoying.
