Halo 3: ODST 'Campaign Edition' gets rid of multiplayer

Microsoft just released Halo 3: ODST "Campaign Edition" on XBLM, nearly four years after the game's original release. The re-release jettisons the game's multiplayer mode.

Sony has been aggressive in experimenting with re-selling its legacy content. From MAG to Starhawk to, most recently, Uncharted 3, the company has been open to selling games "piecemeal," with the single and multiplayer functionality sold separately. Microsoft is sort of copying that approach with today's release of Halo 3: ODST "Campaign Edition," available for $14.99 on Xbox Live Marketplace.

According to the Games on Demand listing, the Campaign Edition "does not include the Halo 3 competitive multiplayer functionality or maps." There's no separate multiplayer-only version of the game to purchase on XBLM, either. (Halo 3 is available on XBLM for $20, complete with single and multiplayer.) The CE does offer Firefight in addition to the campaign mode, however.

This isn't Microsoft's first time breaking up a retail game for digital re-release. Fable 2 was released as a five-episode adventure on Xbox Live back in 2009. Oddly, that's also when Halo 3: ODST was originally released at retail--further proof that Microsoft really doesn't care for day-one digital distribution one bit.

What the hell. I still think Firefight in ODST was my favorite version of the mode in Halo.

Firefight is still there according to the article.

As a big Halo fan, Firefight seemed tacked on. Nothing like Horde mode for Gears 3.

Probably my favorite of the campaigns. Great music. Wish it was a bit longer or they would put out another/followup in the same style.

Firefight is the single best thing about ODST, buy this OR ELSE!

That's really bizarre considering the MP is just Halo3 maps + DLCs and most people have probably moved on to Reach and Halo 4 by now. Are they too proud to just lower the price of the full game so they resort to doing this? MP requires a gold sub anyway, they should have included it.

The strange thing about this is I think ODST is pretty much at that price any way. Why bother releasing another SKU of the game.
