Grand Theft Auto 5 cover revealed, looks familiar

Rockstar revealed its box art for Grand Theft Auto 5 today.

34
The Grand Theft Auto series has certainly built a recognizable brand. Its tiled cover art style immediately marks a recognizable brand worth millions. That means Rockstar doesn't have much reason to shake up a proven formula, and the Grand Theft Auto 5 cover reveal shows the company is sticking with what works. Rockstar showed off the official GTA5 art on its blog today, and yep, that's sure a Grand Theft Auto box alright. Maybe I'm more apt to noticing because only yesterday I saw this breakdown of the boxart from Reddit user DylanJosh. GTA5 follows the formula almost to the letter, not just in general design principles, but down to incredibly specific elements and placement. Helicopter in the top-left? Check. Seductive lady on the middle-left? Check. Motorcycle on the top-right? Check. The only spot that markedly breaks the formula is the presence of an angry rottweiler instead of a vehicle in the bottom-left, which mostly just makes me hope we can ride that dog around town like a tiny rabid horse.

Handling was fine once you started getting better cars. The pieces of shit drive how they're supposed to, especially the old 80's k-car types.

I liked how sloppy the cars were, added to the chaos when you're running from the cops at 130mph down a crowded street trying to dodge obstacles.

That shift from arcadey fake driving in 3/Vice City over to the more realistic physics in 4 was not something I cared for either. It was a major reason I didn't go nearly as far in GTA4 as I did in previous games.

^ Driving in SA and VC was snappy and fun, driving in 4 was mushy, loose, and frustrating.

The really irritating thing in 4 was actually the mechanics of the chase camera, you never knew what you were turning into.

            • reply
              April 2, 2013 8:13 AM

You had control over the chase camera. It's like you guys didn't even try to learn the new system and just expected that you could corner a bus around a 90 degree turn without any effort.

                April 2, 2013 9:01 AM

I expected to corner that bus the same way I did for the previous 5 games, and didn't like the new mechanics. I didn't find it was a camera issue, it was just that things felt more "realistic", which isn't something I cared for in GTA.

Really? Because I thought it was perfect, what with the left stick controlling steering, with your left index on the LB, ready to fire after lining up the shot with the right stick and controlling acceleration with the right trigger. Again, it seems like no one even played the game when they talk about the driving controls and handling.

Yep they have no idea - GTA4 driving is SO GOOD. The only way it's bad is on PC if you've got even mild frame rate issues, the controls go to complete shit.

Yeah, this also fucked me over, especially in the PC version. I need to drive with my right hand, although I have no problem using wasd in shooters with my left hand.

          April 2, 2013 2:39 PM

The physics aren't realistic at all. You can still flip over almost any car on a mostly flat road, the suspensions and weight are ridiculously unrealistic. They just tweaked the handling, steering, braking, acceleration so the shit cars aren't as nimble as the best ones.

That's why you don't like the controls, there's serious fucking problems with the PC port. If you play it on a console - the controls are completely different for the vehicles.

            • reply
              April 2, 2013 2:47 PM

I played the PS3 version and PC and the vehicle controls are exactly the same with a gamepad.

I personally had an easier time with it on PC because it wasn't dropping to sub 15fps all the time while I was trying to drive. Still ran like garbage, but the boost over the console still made everything more playable, on foot and driving cars and motorcycles.

One thing I noticed going back to the PS3 version a few weeks ago, was that the game ran so poorly I found myself driving slower just so I could keep a straight line and not miss the turns due to the choppiness that was interfering. So maybe that's what your problem was. PC version gives the illusion of more control because it does perform slightly better.

I also played it on PS3 and PC, and the driving controls were gross on both. Otherwise, I think GTA 4 was an excellent game.

You must have an absoloute and utter monster PC. The game input code on PC for that game is broken as fuck - and the driving is by far the biggest issue due to it.

The handling (on PC) definitely sucks, on the console, I love the new handling, the old arcadey shit was dumb. This compromise between real and arcade is just perfect.

I don't have a monster PC and it's not broken at all, at least not with a 360 controller. Perhaps the issue lies with you configuration?

Nope, I've tried multiple times, the PC code is very very broken unless you run the game at ridiculously low resolutions and absoloutely ensure you get 60+ fps consistently.

        SAINTS ROW -----IV-----

You can't have a contemporary sandbox crime game, with even "realistic" people and emotions, unless you get rid of probably 99% of the murder, and that would put a damper on how people view the genre.

Kill one person randomly, fine. Kill 10, effective game over, like breaking the masquerade in Bloodlines. Otherwise you have to deal with the fact that your characters are unabashed mass murderers and the police are utterly incompetent. Or establish a world in which human life is actually virtually worthless. Or just go crazy, like Saints Row.

GTA has grown stale. I think they need a new GTA. An MMO.

Set not in a city or even a state, but a whole country. A gigantic open world environment. And not just a criminal..liked the police missions? You can be a cop. Like the firetruck or ambulance missions? Be an EMT. Run an in-game broadcast, or try to destroy a city. Experience the difference in areas: where as running traffic lights doesn't get you noticed in large city areas, in smaller/more rural areas, that'll earn you a wanted level or two.

Become Public Enemy #1, part of a national task force, or just a citizen looking to make a buck.

      Grand Theft America.

I don't think it's grown stale, but I do think that GTA IV was in a horribly boring and unattractive limited-opportunity location, which led to narrow-spectrum missions and gameplay. I think GTA V's location with bolster its missions, and not make them suffer.
