Today at its PAX East panel, Firaxis and 2K Games announced that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming to iOS devices. The iPhone and iPad will sport slightly different interfaces catered to each device.

Jake Solomon, lead designer of XCOM, told Shacknews that this will be a complete port of the game at a set (and so far, undecided) price, rather than charging for microtransactions or chapters as we've seen from some mobile ports.. No Android version is planned currently, but Solomon says that doesn't mean the door is shut on the possibility.

Wonder if it'll be the full game?

I wonder how this will be priced as lot of people seem to complain about anything costing over $2-5 for mobile games.

        I'm thinking 14.99

I think as long as it's cheaper than the PC and console versions then nobody will have any valid complaint with it (assuming they meet the kind of experience they are touting).

I have my doubts they will be able to deliver that kind of experience on an iPhone, but on an iPad this game could be $15-$20 and it would be well priced.

I'm torn between thinking it's neat that mobile devices and other platforms like OS X and Linux are now advanced enough and using enough standardized stuff like OpenGL and so forth that you can conceivably just make them extra targets in your toolchain, and thinking it's lame to try and shimmy a game made for one interface onto a platform with a different interface.

I tried playing the free Episode 1 of The Walking Dead on my iPhone and it was neat, but I got about ten minutes in and thought "I'd rather play this on my PC than this little 4" screen" and deleted it.

"Optimized for iOS" could mean they really did figure out how to make the interface work for the iPad, but it could also mean "it's the whole game but we still dumbed it down for phones"

Anyway, we'll see. Maybe I'm just being a cynical bastard and something like Civ 5 on iPad would rock the house (I hear the Win8 touch version is quite nice)

It's a turn based strategy, which is an ideal genre for touch controls. The current interface actually works OK on a touchscreen; most of the annoyance comes from things like zooming which could easily be replaced with multitouch gestures.

THIS. Some games don't translate well, but that is no reason to say they can't succeed.

I know right?!?! How could you possibly make turn based strategy on a touch screen?!?! 4" inch screens??? I eat 4" for breakfast!

and thinking it's lame to try and shimmy a game made for one interface onto a platform with a different interface.

OMG I couldn't agree more. Like yesterday I was playing the new Tomb Raider, thinking how could anyone, anywhere not play this with a mouse and keyboard?!?!?! I mean, that's clearly what it was designed to be played with, am i right or am I right?!?! Pretty sure every big bugget AAA game over the past 5 years was designed for the PC interface, can't imagine people playing on anything different...that's just insane!

Wow... I *just* finished the game (for the first time) an hour ago. Got it with my BioShock Infinite Steam preorder and all. It's a really solid game, got a *bit* repetitive towards the end, but it was a fun experience throughout. Ending was meh, but I wasn't really expecting much there.

Probably won't play it much more soon, but I'll probably pick it up the next time I have some flights to do... ironman on a flight would be fun.

This would totally work. I sometimes play XCOM on my Android tablet using Splashtop streamer. As long as I'm in a place with decent signal, it works pretty well. A naitive touch interface would be perfect.

Frozen Synapse for iPad was announced November of 2011. They've teased numerous UIs but still no release. There was a closed beta not too long ago so hopefully its getting close, but jeez...

This and Civ Rev are SCREAMING to be on the WII U. It's just a natural marriage. What gives?

Civ Rev was headed for Wii at one point but they canceled it. Not sure why but it probably had to do with potentially having to develop a different interface for the Wiimote and the small market share non-Nintendo developed Wii titles had at the time.

As for Wii U, it's probably just that, like 2007 with CivRev, it's too early for the Wii U to have enough sales to bother with (which may always be the case depending on how things shake out).
