Report: Next Xbox controller to feature 'improved ergonomics'

Although the next Xbox will ship with an upgraded Kinect, you'll still use a controller with buttons to operate the system. As with PS4, it appears the move to the next generation means you'll have to pick up new controllers.

Microsoft has remained oddly silent about its next Xbox console, codenamed Durango. However, an apparent leak of the system SDK reveals some new tidbits about Redmond's next-gen effort.

Documentation posted by VGLeaks reiterates the Kinect requirement we heard about months ago. "Every Durango console will be sold with a new high-fidelity Kinect Sensor, which will be required for the system to operate," the help file says.

Although the next Xbox will ship with an upgraded Kinect, you'll still use a controller with buttons to operate the system. As with PS4, it appears the move to the next generation means you'll have to pick up new controllers. Durango will feature a new controller that will "make the best-in-class Xbox 360 controller even better." According to the documentation, "it will have low-latency wireless connectivity to the console, and improved ergonomics." Whatever that means.

"System interactions that use the controller will be simplified to make them easier for noncore gamers," the file points out, emphasizing Microsoft's expanded focus for the Xbox brand.

Intriguingly, it appears that although the next Xbox will include a Blu-ray drive, "all games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will not be supported." While you will still be able to buy games at retail, discs will be used solely to install content onto the hard drive. "During gameplay, games will not use content from the optical disc. An installation system is being designed that will allow gamers to begin playing while the game is being installed on the hard drive rather than waiting until installation is complete."

Rumors have persisted that the next Xbox will block the ability to play used games, and some theorize that the installation requirement could reflect such a policy. However, the original Xbox 360 was also plagued with many hard drive issues--including failing disc drives. By mandating hard drive installations, Microsoft could also extend the life of the next Xbox by removing one of the main sources of wear and tear on the disc drives.

Message to MS: Allow Bluray movie discs to be played on the unit, Im not going to use your streaming service instead (Im sure thats what you thought when you saw Sony's per-machine license for bluray movies). Work something out with them. Im not going to buy a PS4 to play movies either, if anything this will make me avoid the Bluray format altogether.

Used games: At the very least, allow used game buyers to activate a new user for the title for a small fee, say 9.99$, this keeps it low enough to keep the used game marklet alive but also allows you to dip your grubby money net into yet another market.

Where did you read about a per-machine license for Blu-ray movies? I don't recall that at all.

Read it somewhere, bluray movie playback will not happy possibly, i bet Sony wanted a pretty penny for it

if it reads bluray discs, it will read movies. They have to pay the fee either way.

It'll have a Bluray drive but you'll need the Bluray app to watch a movie. To run the app, you'll need an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

/bitter 360 owner that doesn't want to pay for Gold

also, they would never do that for used games as you could buy one copy, then have each friend activate theirs for 9.99 by "buying" your disc. Wont happen.

I thought it was going to say 'Next Xbox controller to require a subscription to XBL Gold for full service.' .

All they need to do is provide a better D-Pad, and the controller is already perfect. Don't fuck it up MS!

This, take the D-pad off the Bean controllers, that be perfect, well a 6 button layout would be pretty slick too.

        Didn't Nintendo's d-pad patent expire years ago?

Why isn't everyone using it now?

Yeah, the D-pad on the Onza isn't conducive to games that really need a D-pad beyond inventory control, but all the other aspects of the Onza are awesome, especially the triggers, and the tactile-switch face buttons. It's the perfect controller for Bayonetta.

No, not programmable, but the mouse-click buttons make it far easier to time button-presses without having to mash down the face buttons. With the original 360 controller, I was getting worse combo performance than with the PS3 controller, but then with the Onza, it got far better.

What they failed o mention is that the new controller will also require an always on connection.

Question, if MS is seriously determined in undermining the used game sales industry, what does that mean for the new retail game discs that are sold? More specifically, once you install a new retail game on your xbox, will you be allowed to reinstall from the same disc at a later time if you choose to delete the game from the HD? I sure as feck hope so. It would be full bullocks to have the retail discs be one time use and (no questions) be ties to only one xbox console.

      Da faq?

Hmm for what ever reason I worry about he next Xbox I am not sure why, something feels off. I wish they would officially already release info like the PS4 so I don't have to worry.

Interesting that you will have to install the games on the hard drive, this could mean a few things, huh.

If MS next xbox does not allow second hand games I wonder if people would bail on them? I have a feeling it is going to happen and a game can only be used on one system once it is installed.

Hmm I wish I new the real deal.

I also have a bad feeling about the new Xbox. Weaker graphics, slower RAM, no used games (maybe), Kinect either shoved in your face or jacking up the cost for no good reason, more casual focus - it just all adds up to a lot of concerns.

I mean what do I care, I'm a mostly-PC guy who only ever buys Nintendo consoles, but I've got this gut feeling that PlayStation is going to gain ground this new generation.

Yeah same, something is up and it is weird that some of us can already feel it with our sixth gaming sense.

I really hope we are wrong and it owns, but at this point it does not feel right. Everything Sony did at the pre show was amazing the PS4 is going to be a amazing console no question what so ever.
