Anachronox Snipping
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 12, 2000 12:22pm PDTPC Format is running a story Anachronox, the ION Storm RPG may be cut in half to get the game out as soon as possible. Current design will have the game in development into the next year, something Eidos isn't keen on seeing happening, as they apparently can't afford it. The part of the game that isn't shipping would appear in a future release. Here are the E3 screenshots and the older archive of screenshots from the game. Thanks Blues News.
Update ION's Brian "Squirrel" Eiserloh updated his .plan with word that Eidos did not order a cut of the game, but that the Anachronox team decided to do this, over a year ago. Here's a snip
There was an excellent stopping-point in the story about halfway through (in which one set of issues gets resolved but another can of worms is opened), and this point now serves as the (excellent) conclusion of Anachronox. The second half of the story - for which a substantial amount of art and level-work have already been created - is planned for a seperate release

Why is it so hard for engine licensees to improve the engines? It's like they believe that because they licensed an engine, improving it would be wrong because it would go against the purpose of doing so: a shorter developement time due to not having to focus on tech.

NO, Eidos did NOT cut Anachronox in half. WE did. And it was over a year ago.
The story, as it was originally laid out, was huge. We brought on a full-time writer (Richard Gaubert) in January of '99 to flesh out all of the game's dialogue. Once Richie got to it, however, we soon realized that the level of detail he was going into with each character was much greater than we had anticipated, and so we had to make a choice between (a) cutting some depth and (b) cutting the length of the story.
We chose (b). There was an excellent stopping-point in the story about halfway through (in which one set of issues gets resolved but another can of worms is opened), and this point now serves as the (excellent) conclusion of Anachronox. The second half of the story - for which a substantial amount of art and level-work have already been created - is planned for a seperate release. (Keep in mind that even the original Anachronox story was only a portion of a larger overall story/mythos.)
I assume this is just a case of some uninformed folks picking up some (very) old news and, true to form, not bothering to check it out before publishing it. ;-)
Suffice it to say that we're psyched about Anox, as is Eidos.
sorry to burst your bubble, ;-)

But the only things that impress me now are:
Serious Sam screenshots.
Quake 3 caliber screenshots.
some UT screenshots.
Not much else looks attractive anymore.. ya know? After all those nice curves in Q3 and all... nothing really catches my eye.

Splitting Anox into 2 games has been the tentative plan for a while, simply because it is so massive that it would take too long and be too big to make it into one whole game. I wouldn't worry about it being "cut in half" because both "halves" of Anachronox will easily be the same size if not a bit larger than the rest of the games being released nowadays. Yes, it's THAT big.

But mysteriously not with Daikatana, the most horrible, most disappointing, most ridiculed game of the decade... hmm
Something like cut the game in half and sell the last half as an expansion or a part 2?
