Trion Worlds' upcoming MMO-ish persistent world shooter Defiance promises "no subscription required" to play. But, online games aren't cheap to sustain, and it should come as no surprise that there will be much more content to pay for beyond the game's standard $60 entry fee.

Defiance will have at least five DLC packs rolling after the game's launch which will be bundled into a "Season Pass." The $39.99 bundle will add new playable alien species, new weapons and vehicles, missions, and rewards. According to Trion Worlds, the bundle offers a 20% savings over buying the add-ons individually.

Given Defiance's deep integration with the television show, it's likely players will be highly encouraged to buy into the Season Pass structure to fully enjoy Trion's transmedia vision. So, while the game technically doesn't require a subscription, today's DLC announcement makes it seem like it pretty much does.

i played the beta, i wasn't impressed, but then again it's just a beta. I hope they are not banking the success of this game on the popularity of the show (since there are supposedly events that will tie them together after launch) . I would much prefer that they just bring back EoN :(

What did you not like about it? I'm looking for a Global Agenda with Rift world events. Yes/no?

I never played Global Agenda, but I thought it was a solid game. You run around doing quests or challenges you come across in the world and then a Rift event can happen any time, they range from smaller ones you can solo to huge ones that I saw 40+ people doing and it still wasn't easy.

I enjoyed it quite a bit.

So basically they're planning to do F2P *wrong* and velvet rope key content like weapons, mission, vehicles, etc. Hiding it behind "DLC" doesn't change that.
