Looking At A Rampage

3dfx has been pretty tight lipped about their next-gen Rampage card. It looks like things might start to change over the summer though. If you remember those specs that got leaked a while back it looks like a pretty happenin card. 3DRetreat got word from 3dfx that the Rampage card will be supporting DirectX and OpenGL. (Notice a lack of Glide?). Also... I did a bit more digging and came up with this bit from November of 1999 where the 3dfx guys were already more excited about the Rampage than the Voodoo5. Looking at how the V5 boards have come out in the Quake3 benchmarks, I can see why some 3dfx folks may have been already looking ahead.

...a completely new architecture, code-named Rampage. "We've spent the last 18 months having 30 engineers designing a new core from the ground up," Zacarias said. The firm expects to introduce Rampage in the first half of 2000, with production slated for the second half.
Well, I guess Zacarias was wrong on that introduction date.

  • well unreal engine i fux0r3d, but its got some nice features, and some shitty ones

like it looks better than q2, and it has some nice effects, its portals are kinda neat, it does large area better than quake does them. and i meen in UT when u shoot the alt fire on the asmd rifle and then shoot it with normal fire and it blows up in the air the effect is nice, but as it stands right now, unreal engine is showing its age very much show AND it runs like crap on Nvidia. funny thing is i heard that it runs much faster in d3d on like a ATI card. its like nvidia cards just dont like unreal, not that unreal doesnt like d3d. still IMHO everything should be OpenGL, fuck MS, and keep it multiplatform

so yeah deus ex looks like ass on it unless u run 32bit, and then it looks "OK" but runs like shit (on nvidia). but with the unreal engine they gained the large areas which is something i think deus ex needed

probably would have been better on like lithtech 2 or something, i think that engine is going to kick some ass, it can do some very large out door areas and keep running fast ,or so i have read...

those new NOLF shots look cool, theres like 28 new ones the other day

  • Actually from the benchmarks I've seen, the GF2 GTS is only a tad behind the V5 in UT performance wise, at least. In 16bit color, I would imagine the V5 looks better.

UT runs fine on my TNT2 Ultra. I use high quality everything at 16bit. Quality is decent.

The whole thing is a far cry from Quake 3 which runs awesome at 800x600x32 and looks phenomenal, IMHO.

Deus Ex on the other hand runs like and looks like absolute ass. I run 800x600 with 32bit textures, high quality everything (because it doesn't help to turn it down). It's dithered like shit and runs like shit. But the game itself is awesome so that makes up for it I guess. I sure hope they make a multiplayer patch! And I can't wait for the editing tools. I really want to make my own scenarios. Oh, and an expansion pack, and a sequel. More Deus Ex!

Christ. Choosing the Unreal engine gave them nothing. I don't know why developers would ever choose Unreal over Q2 or Q3. At least Q2 and Q3 run very well on ALL hardware, not just 3dfx boards. And it's not like Unreal does anything special in terms of effects and features. I have a terrible feeling Duke4 is going to suck ass due to that crappy ass engine. I'd take Valve's modified Quake 1 engine with skeletal animation over Unreal ANY day.
