Looking At A Rampage
by Steve Gibson, Jul 12, 2000 5:26am PDT3dfx has been pretty tight lipped about their next-gen Rampage card. It looks like things might start to change over the summer though. If you remember those specs that got leaked a while back it looks like a pretty happenin card. 3DRetreat got word from 3dfx that the Rampage card will be supporting DirectX and OpenGL. (Notice a lack of Glide?). Also... I did a bit more digging and came up with this bit from November of 1999 where the 3dfx guys were already more excited about the Rampage than the Voodoo5. Looking at how the V5 boards have come out in the Quake3 benchmarks, I can see why some 3dfx folks may have been already looking ahead.
...a completely new architecture, code-named Rampage. "We've spent the last 18 months having 30 engineers designing a new core from the ground up," Zacarias said. The firm expects to introduce Rampage in the first half of 2000, with production slated for the second half.Well, I guess Zacarias was wrong on that introduction date.

like it looks better than q2, and it has some nice effects, its portals are kinda neat, it does large area better than quake does them. and i meen in UT when u shoot the alt fire on the asmd rifle and then shoot it with normal fire and it blows up in the air the effect is nice, but as it stands right now, unreal engine is showing its age very much show AND it runs like crap on Nvidia. funny thing is i heard that it runs much faster in d3d on like a ATI card. its like nvidia cards just dont like unreal, not that unreal doesnt like d3d. still IMHO everything should be OpenGL, fuck MS, and keep it multiplatform
so yeah deus ex looks like ass on it unless u run 32bit, and then it looks "OK" but runs like shit (on nvidia). but with the unreal engine they gained the large areas which is something i think deus ex needed
probably would have been better on like lithtech 2 or something, i think that engine is going to kick some ass, it can do some very large out door areas and keep running fast ,or so i have read...
those new NOLF shots look cool, theres like 28 new ones the other day
UT runs fine on my TNT2 Ultra. I use high quality everything at 16bit. Quality is decent.
The whole thing is a far cry from Quake 3 which runs awesome at 800x600x32 and looks phenomenal, IMHO.
Deus Ex on the other hand runs like and looks like absolute ass. I run 800x600 with 32bit textures, high quality everything (because it doesn't help to turn it down). It's dithered like shit and runs like shit. But the game itself is awesome so that makes up for it I guess. I sure hope they make a multiplayer patch! And I can't wait for the editing tools. I really want to make my own scenarios. Oh, and an expansion pack, and a sequel. More Deus Ex!
Christ. Choosing the Unreal engine gave them nothing. I don't know why developers would ever choose Unreal over Q2 or Q3. At least Q2 and Q3 run very well on ALL hardware, not just 3dfx boards. And it's not like Unreal does anything special in terms of effects and features. I have a terrible feeling Duke4 is going to suck ass due to that crappy ass engine. I'd take Valve's modified Quake 1 engine with skeletal animation over Unreal ANY day.

i had a PII450 256 ram and a geforce and UT just ran "OK" in d3d
and now that im PIII 800 with 133 bus and geforce and it just runs "better ok"
but at anyrate u cant really dispute that the v5 is better for UT lovers than a geforce. the v5 is just better for unreal engine right now, period.

And of course working drivers coming out in early to mid 2002.
Brand new architecture means brand new drivers + 3dfx = good luck.

the nvidia stuff is just so good now, and 3dfx just cant compete really, unless you play UT (its ass with nvidia cards) .
but anyway if 3dfx does have another v3 on their hands with a rampage and go belly up, that meens less compition, and thats bad for us the buyers.
AMD? EAX? A3D? wow. they sucked a whole lot more cocks that i

I suspect nVidia didnt bother with it because Geforce's run 99% of games fine without the need for the extra speed of using palletized textures. The only reason the Unreal engine uses it is because thats is how Glide manages textures.
If you think about it, Glide isn't really that great a system. 256x256 max textures, 16bit rendering etc. Its no wonder 3dfx are ditching it fot Rampage.
Finally #36, Using Vertex lighting will remove all shaders, because it forces all textures in the game to a single pass.

I think FSAA will be great in the future when fillrates are high enough to sustain it with no FPS loss in ANY resolution, but at the moment i really dont think its viable. Hell you can use TV out instead.
BTW I am English, and you bet your ass that Z is "Zed". After all, it was "Zed's dead baby, Zed's dead."

Uhhh, already too late for the introduction. Month 7 of 12. I don't give a shit when it is introduced and when it is produced. When will it see a store shelf? Release date? Nvidia "introduced" the GF2 two weeks before it hit the shelves! WTF is this 6 month pre-introduction crap?
30 engineers? That's it? Is that supposed to be a lot?
Ill get back to you later if I decide to sell this thing...

[Eynahsint] Still, Counterstrike players are usually a lot more belligerent because they have shitty computers. The only thing worse than being a dork with no life who does nothing but play computer games is being a dork with no life who does nothing but player computer games on a shitty PC.
I guess i got owned. :P
