Weekend Confirmed 153 - PlayStation 4 announcements, Year Walk, Crysis 3
by Jeff Mattas, Feb 22, 2013 11:00am PSTThe PlayStation 4 has been announced, so it shouldn't be a surprise that this week's episode of Weekend Confirmed is all about the new system, services, and software. Though Jeff Cannata is away in Barcelona, Garnett Lee and "Indie" Jeff Mattas are joined by Christian Spicer and Mike Schramm to break down what's exciting, what's concerning, and that which is still unknown about Sony's next-gen console announcements. Though PlayStation 4 is this week's focus, the crew also manages to sneak in some impressions of Crysis 3, and praise for Simogo's moody iOS adventure, Year Walk. Of course, a fresh batch of Finishing Moves brings it all home.

I dont get why all during the PS1 and PS2, everyone said nothing wrong about the DualShock, then the instant the 360 releases everyone suddenly hates the DualShock for no apparent reason. Sony would have been stupid to "give into the 'demand'" and off-set the sticks. The only "demand" i ever hear is from journalists.

That sort of hold also lets you move the sticks really precisely if you sort of place your thumb on the stick, stationary, and use the other hand's wrist to tilt the controller. It's much more natural than it sounds - I just kind of realized I was doing it in Gran Turismo 4 one day and noticed it improved accuracy and reduced fatigue.
IMO, the 360 controller is quite usable, but the sticks require a weird grip when using both. I would think it's only so popular because people are used to it now... and I'm willing to bet it's laid out the way it is because that's how it was done on the Dreamcast, and if you add another stick like a PlayStation or GameCube has, you get the lopsided sticks. Have you noticed that there are directional bumps on the top of the 360's sticks, but not the DualShock series? If you push the sticks together on a DualShock, they will be aimed perfectly left and right, giving a frame of reference It's also easy to feel when they're perfectly up or down. If you push them together on the 360, you will get down-right, and up-left at an arbitrary angle, and when you hold the controller asymmetrically, there's a bit of disorientation, so they added studs to say "this is left, this is up," etc because it's unnatural otherwise.
Ultimately, to each their own, and I know the 360 controller is popular in the West, but if the PS4 copied the 360, I'd probably break my rule about first party controllers and find one with symmetrical sticks, whoever made it.
