      TLDR so far:

x86 CPU, 8gb shared GDDR5, hard drive, leaked controller pics were accurate, Wii-ish sensor bar tracks controller position.

      PC-like suspend/resume.
Background updates are possible (even when system is "off" - probably suspended)
Titles are playable when partially downloaded

Press "Share" button controller, browse previous minutes of gameplay, select and it will upload in the background
Browse live stream of what your friends are playing. And I think he said you can take over for him?

Integration with existing social networks? Facebook-ish feed of what your friends are doing/videos they have recorded

Apps for smart phones, tablets, vita

Predict the next game you'll purchase, download it for you = 0 seconds to play after purchase

UStream integration. This whole video streaming/sharing thing will probably be a prime differentiator to 360v2.

Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it. Others have made that kind of claim, but I've never seen it actually implemented in anything resembling a general sense.

Valve spent a long time getting it working for titles using the .gcf file system on Steam.

It was a pain in the ass to properly support, and once you released your first patch, streaming play wasn't supported.

          • reply
            February 20, 2013 3:48 PM

Yeah, I specifically remember it being a claimed feature of Steam way back when, but it was dropped pretty quickly.

I bet they start the play streaming and then switch to the downloaded version at some point.

It's not out of the realm of possibility, the hardware of PS4 (being x86, etc) should conceivably make cross platform games a much easier proposition.

The Last Guardian (footage thus far) totally belongs on PS3. I've no problem with it doing both but fuck if they skip PS3 that's a joke. I have no intention of buying a PS4 until ideally late 2014.

I'd like to see more games from Q-Games, ThatGameCompany, Naughty Dog, Sony themselves - Bungie games :/ I'll try a demo but after Halo, I'm not sure Bungie make products I give a shit about, especially online focused ones.

I think this was an incredible conference. Amazing first-party support, great tech, and best of all--no focus on gimmicks. The fact that they didn't have to show off a system is terrific.

        February 20, 2013 5:14 PM

Would have liked to see more gameplay but I suppose that is what E3 is for. I find it interesting that they kept the cpu and gpu info relatively sparce but did come out to let us know it is 8gb of unified gddr5 ram which is sweet. Really this is just a first strike type deal, your move now MS.

PCs innovate! But progress in PCs is a gradual flow, day by day, which makes for much less exciting news than the generational revolutions of the console world.

          February 20, 2013 6:26 PM

Yup, exactly this. In fact the PS4 is taking a lot of PC innovation in hardware. Oh but be prepared for hordes of "PC gaming is dead" in the next year after it comes out.

Hey, Xperia Play can run On-live. I've played Street Fighter IV, Unreal Tournament 3, and Lego Batman all smoothly and controlled pretty well on the Xperia Play. I may need to get a faster internet through Comcast, but Sony must not let Xperia Play gamers perish. I believe in One Sony!
