Rock Band DLC releases to end in April

On April 2nd, Harmonix will no longer release DLC for its Rock Band games.

Harmonix has released DLC for the Rock Band series for 275 consecutive weeks. Over the past five years, over 4,000 songs have been released for the franchise. However, it's all coming to an end on April 2nd. On that day, Harmonix will no longer regularly release DLC for its music game.

"We hope that you’ll all agree that this has been a tremendous run, and you should know it’s a ride that we at Harmonix have been thrilled to be a part of," Harmonix's Aaron Trites posted in a letter to fans.

Harmonix's ongoing support of the franchise has been extraordinary, even in spite of the genre's significant drop in popularity. The developer is keen to point out that the series isn't dead, but simply taking a break. "We don't have any Rock Band titles in active development at the moment," an FAQ reveals, but over a thousand songs will continue to be offered at 50% off. In addition, Harmonix can still consider making more DLC in the future "should the right band and the right opportunity arise."

Rock Band Network, Harmonix's platform for user-submitted content on Xbox 360 will continue "for the foreseeable future." However, because RBN relies on XNA for submission, should Microsoft ever discontinue that service, RBN will also no longer work. In addition, PS3 players will no longer get new RBN tracks, as they are submitted in the same way as standard DLC. That means the release of RBN tracks will end on April 2nd for PS3 owners, as well.

Harmonix plans on releasing an "appropriate track" on April 2nd. (We're guessing a DLC release of The Final Countdown?)

Sad times over here. We still do RB nights every week or two over here and have been for years. If I could, I'd pour an oz for every track released.

Maybe they can sell it at a discount... for $2,000 or so?

In a year they should do a sale where they sell every song for like 50 quid. I would totally buy.
