Destiny revealed: Bungie's ambitious online FPS

Destiny exemplifies the very epitome of AAA game development: it aims to be nothing less than the biggest world ever created for a video game, while reinventing the FPS.

Every AAA game aims to set a new benchmark. Some games will aim to have the best graphics, others the biggest worlds. Others, still, try to reinvent genres--or create new ones entirely. Destiny is the epitome of AAA game development: it aims to be nothing less than the biggest world ever created for a video game, while reinventing the FPS. Bungie's aspirations are so extraordinary, it's not difficult to dismiss it all as hyperbole. Clearly, the team has proven itself through the original Halo games--but Destiny takes their ambition to a whole new level. It's difficult to fully understand what Destiny even is. After a full day at Bungie's HQ in Washington, I came away with more questions than answers. To sum up Destiny, I tried to look at its individual components and compare it to what's already available. Halo While Destiny may be the studio's first original game since leaving Halo in 343's hands, it still shares many similarities with Microsoft's franchise. Both are futuristic sci-fi first-person shooters set to the orchestral sounds of Marty O'Donnell. Players will travel through exotic locations and fight various alien species with a wide assortment of out-there weapons. There is one key twist in the gameplay, however: we saw iron sights--a feature which the Halo franchise has long avoided.

Fight aliens in space. Again.

Borderlands It may look like Halo, but Destiny is probably better compared to Borderlands. Unlike the Halo series, the story of Destiny doesn't revolve around a single Master Chief-type hero. Instead, players create their own avatars, choose from a variety of different classes (each with their own magical abilities), and collect lots, and lots of loot. From the concept art shown to us, it seems like there will be hundreds of weapons to collect, with rarer weapons having special traits. Although Borderlands can be played entirely single player, many would argue that the experience is designed around co-op. Destiny is no different, with many raids designed with cooperative play in mind. Raids, loot, aliens, co-op--Destiny shares quite a lot with Gearbox's shooter.

Character classes will have different abilities

Mass Effect Over the course of five Halo games, Bungie crafted a world memorable enough to spawn countless books, comics, live-action shorts, etc. Their talent in world-building is being used to create an even more expansive world for Destiny. The scope of the game could be compared to BioWare's Mass Effect series. Both will have you traveling from planet to planet throughout our solar system. Activision and Bungie promised a narrative that spans "multiple books" and will take "ten years" to tell--an effort that will undoubtedly take multiple expansion packs and sequels. Better hold onto those save files. Halo 4 Bungie promises that Destiny will also have a "persistent world," although how that works is still unclear. Destiny will add new content on a regular basis, not unlike the "season" of Spartan Ops content in Halo 4. By connecting your game to your smartphone, you'll be able to get notifications whenever new content is added to Destiny. The exact scope and implementation of this content is unknown, but Activision did say that they do not plan on charging a subscription fee for this access.

'The Traveler' is the giant orb atop Earth

Journey And here's the most puzzling aspect of the game. Online interaction seems to take a page from thatgamecompany's beloved Journey. Bungie wants to do away with the traditional way of doing matchmaking, where players enter a lobby and wait for a host to start a game. While you'll still be able to partner up with friends, the game will also connect players together seamlessly. For example, you and a friend may be partaking in a raid when suddenly, another player can appear in your game to help out. These moments of unexpected human interaction proved to be delightful in Journey--but will the experience carry over in a more aggressive genre? Once again, how this mechanic is being implemented isn't particularly clear, but Bungie is exploring new ways of connecting gamers in Destiny. Combine all these disparate elements together, and you'll scratch the surface on what Bungie is aiming to do with Destiny. There are still many other aspects of the game that have yet to be elaborated upon, like PVP, integration with Bungie.net, and if the game will appear on next-gen consoles and PC. Unfortunately, everyone at the studio was mum about the topic, with Activision's Eric Hirshberg saying that the game is only announced for PS3 and Xbox 360 right now.
Disclosure: Activision provided travel and accommodations for this coverage.

Why are they shlepping Destiny on the current hardware when the game appears to be a decent ways off and next gen systems are on the horizon?

Seems like the easiest way to hold back your ambitious new game, there's bound to be a lot of sacrifices and compromises for the aging hardware.

I think it's all about install base. This is an expensive game. Release the first one on current gen, and then look forward for future games.

Install base is sort of what I was figuring ( http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=29703523#item_29703523 ), but what's the ETA? If it's delayed and well after the launch of these new systems that people are buying and replacing what they currently have in their entertainment setups, will they actually do a lot of business on the old hardware with a new game?

It's Bungie backed by Activision so it'll probably sell regardless, but I know I will not be interested in any 360 or PS3 release once the new systems are out, and I don't even plan to buy any of these systems at launch. I've already been preferring the PC for a long time now but that's not really the point here.

Hopefully they're developing it for next gen systems and scaling shit way back for the current hardware, and will have better versions of the same game more or less ready to go for the new consoles. Activision seems to want their games on all the platforms these days. Although apparently not the PC with this one. Will be interesting to see if a 'next-gen' version is at the Sony conference on the 20th. I'm guessing not.

^^ I was thinking the same thing. Why is this going to be on the current Gen. Looks like this will be a PC purchase as long as it doesn't look like it is 5 years old.

So they're betting on the next gen console having BC...or do they just figure that everyone is going to keep their current gen stuff hooked up to their TVs as well? If the next gen systems don't have BC...I tend to consider that to be MS and Sony telling me not to buy ANY current gen stuff anymore ever.

On Giant Bomb Jeff seemed pretty convinced that it was coming out on the next-gen platforms. He said it was coming out Q2 2014 at the earliest, because Activision said it wouldn't have an impact on their 2013 financials during an investor call.

The reason they can't speak about it is because neither of the next-gen platforms have been officially announced yet, so they are still bound by NDA.

I don't know, but unless the contract has changed, the first one is going to be Microsoft console platform exclusive: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/21/entertainment/la-et-ct-bungie-activision-contract-20120521

The 27-page agreement calls for Bungie to develop four "sci-fantasy, action shooter games," code-named "Destiny," released every other year, beginning in the fall of 2013. Bungie also agreed to put out four downloadable expansion packs code-named "Comet," every other year beginning in the fall of 2014. Activision has never disclosed release plans for Bungie's titles.

The first Destiny game will initially only be available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles, as well as its potential successor, which the contract refers to as the "Xbox 720." Later games would be made for Xbox consoles as well as Sony Corp.'s expected successor to the PlayStation 3, and on personal computers.

Maybe part of it is platform familiarity, considering that Bungie has been a 360-exclusive dev for almost 10 years (since Halo 3 started development).

Hmm, Hirshberg saying "360 and PS3" seems to suggest that cross-developing for PS3 would be far easier than attempting to make a PC port. Bungie... you got some 'splainin' to doooo...

You don't need to have your handheld in a sandbox shooter. There is a story for PS2 but its all set up and lore behind the factions. Story elements have to be really done well to work in multiplayer.

I think that's why Bungie are going down the chaptered + instanced route. Some linearity is needed to help force the narrative on the player, and I imagine they want this in the first game to establish the universe/lore.

so you're looking more towards more Halo... which a lot of people are over though. So my point is still what are they doing to draw new people in? Or is just expected they mostly get newcomers with a new console who don't have any frame of reference.

I didn't say I was looking towards anything. I was disputing that this game is comparable to PlanetSide.

Ugh, the phrase "reinventing the FPS" is such a disgusting thing. Andrew (and the rest of the gaming industry press PR-extension), please go find a name for whatever encompasses games like Borderlands, that have action-RPG features like loot and level progression, MMO features like PvP and persistence, and say that Destiny is THAT kind of game... and STOP shitting on other FPS games.

The only similarity that Destiny will have to games like Bioshock Infinite is that it lets the player attack with a firearm in first-person perspective. That doesn't make Bioshock Infinite any less relevant, nor does it make other single-player FPS games, non-persistent competitive multiplayer FPS games any less relevant. Stop participating in Activision's marketing smear campaign.

Generally you bury bad news on a weekend, not try to get lots of eyes on stuff. And if you were going to get play at a major hardware announce like the PS4 thing, you don't preempt that with your own low-content reveal like this.

              • reply
                February 17, 2013 11:57 AM

If something does get revealed alongside the PS4, maybe they preempted it to avoid annoying Microsoft and inform people that it is a multiple platform game, not PS4 only.

There was some reasoning to do this on a Sunday, I don't think it was an error on Bungie's part. The content shown was a little underwhelming though, even if the concept sounds cool.

There might have been some kind of contractual agreement around "announce" satisfied by going out with this today (maybe something with MS if they're then a major factor in the PS4 announce). Still bizarre timing (and agree the content was underwhelming).

Nintendo typically releases first-party games on Sundays, which makes sense. More people at home and interested in playing games on the weekends.

I realize game releases are different than news embargoes, but the same logic applies.

And I want my multilayer games to be stand-alone competitive matches, with none of this persistent character and grind to unlock items and skills bullshit. Some of the best multiplayer games of all time (both pvp and coop) have been greatly enhanced by unlocks.

Tribes Ascend, Killing Floor, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 come immediately to mind. Hell, Vegas 1 started you off with everything unlocked and it felt far less compelling to progress than in Vegas 2.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think unlocks are suited for every game and I've loved plenty without them. But it's all about the execution and how well they fit into the overall design. The games where unlocks are terrible are the ones where unlocks are just bolted on as an afterthought to a game that isn't worth playing for more than a few hours.

Adding in persistence, perks, loot, RPG elements, and other stuff into FPSes makes me FEAR the experience more, because more is at stake, longer play sessions are required, and there's a higher risk of bickering, hacking, and unbalanced play triggering a bad experience.

So a Bungie teaser that has maybe 10 seconds of actual gameplay and the rest concept art and renders...

      Christmas 2016 release?

Yea, I'm thinking so too... I guess this was more like a Teaser than a full detail. If they're targeting current-gen consoles I got to imagine it'll come out this year or very early next year.

he's totally right... from a certain perspective. There's millions of people out there who have never played a shooter on PC, don't know what M+KB looks like and were most likely introduced to the genre either through Halo or CoD.

That massive blob of people certainly doesn't give a fuck about playing anywhere except on consoles.

It's just wanky to say that just because a thing is popular that it is at all good, let alone the only thing that matters, and that 'nobody' wants anything else. Even people who like console shooters are starting to have negative feelings towards CoD, and even Halo to a certain extent. They're definitely getting bored of the incessant franchising, hence the growing market for stuff like Bethesda's various first person games, and Bioshock.

But he's not wrong as such.

Yeah it's a bit clumsy, still implies this won't be on PC, which is a fucking tragedy given some of the vistas it looks like they're rendering and the 10 year plan.

We all lose for reading Destructoid.

Up until 2008/2009, Halo dominated the genre. So basically 2001 to 2008 for a total of at least 7 years, which marks a longer run as "top FPS" than Quake or Doom had. If we're in the "CoD Modern Warfare" era now, it's been going for about 5 or 6 years as sole top FPS. What else is there? TF2 or CS? They're not only isolated and unique cases, but they're smaller than Halo was and smaller by far than Modern Warfare (unless you're counting ONLY PC players).

Halo changed how FPS games are made.

Counter-Strike was pretty big back then, probably had more active players the first Halo. The first Halo was also a LAN / local game only until it eventually came to the PC.

Both HL & HL2 sold more copies than Halo and Halo 2 if the internet is to be considered accurate. (5 & 8 million units for Halo and Halo 2, 9 and 10+ million for Half-Life and Half-Life 2). I realize Half-Life came before Halo, but the multiplayer mod scene blew up for that game and stayed strong during the first Halo's lifespan.

Other notable FPS on the PC in the 2000-2008 time frame (SP and MP):

          Quake 3
          NOLF
          Deus Ex
          Medal of Honor: AA
          Counter-Strike
          AVP2
          Call of Duty
          Battlefield 1942
          Tribes 2
          Day of Defeat
          Team Fortress Classic
          Thief 2
          Op Flash
          America's Army
          Ghost Recon
          NOLF2
          UT2004
          SoF2
          Call of Duty 2
          Battlefield 2
          DoD:S & CS:S
          Far Cry
          FEAR
          Planetside
          Painkiller
          Crysis
          Tribes Vengeance
          TF2
          Portal
          Rainbow Six: Vegas
          SWAT 4
          Call of Duty 4
          ArmA
          Crysis Warhead
          BioShock
          Far Cry 2
          Left 4 Dead
          STALKER

I'd love to throw Max Payne 1 & 2 in there but those were obviously 3rd person.

All of those titles probably weren't even close to the massive sales of a Halo 2, although I'm guessing the Battlefield series and maybe a few other games and mods came close to the online multiplayer popularity or even surpassed it. Console online MP was still in its infancy back then. It wasn't until Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 that that stuff gained a ton of ground, even with the subscription required on 360.

Halo definitely changed how FPS games were made (for better and / or worse), and while I played the Halo series and enjoyed certain aspects of it (basic combat, coop) I was and still remain more into PC shooters, largely because of the controls. With multiplatform games it's always been no contest on which I prefer, even if they are crummy ports they'll still play and look better and run smoother on PC. I understand I am in the minority these days, however. And have been for a long time now, likely since the old PC mainstays started focusing on console development.

If it's going to be a Journey-style seamless SP/MP fusion I will definitely be interested, that sounds way better than the MMO style thing I'd assumed they were making.

Though I probably won't be getting the new MS console, so I guess I should avoid getting excited by this.

Looks interesting, but seeing Activision's name attached to it has a lot more negative connotations than positive for me. If the Dev's succeed in making a great game that I enjoy playing, you can be assured Activision will run it into the ground grinding every cent they can out of it.

Publishers are great when they enable veteran and visionary developers to realize a solid idea, they are horrific once that idea starts making money.

Ya, this is all cute but the issue here is paying $1265.31 to play an MMO on my console.
$65.31 (IF that will be the price) Plus say $10 bucks a month for 10 years.
      Nah, I don't think so.

FPS barely keep my interest past 2 minutes. I start dozing off from mind numbness.
