Tetris has gained the status of video game royalty, and that more-or-less guarantees the puzzle mechanics will be iterated on and repackaged forever. EA's latest take on the puzzler, called Tetris Blitz, is a free-to-play game for Apple and Android smartphones adn tablets. It's due this spring.
The game has you clearing as many lines as possible in two-minute sprints, and triggering cascades to activate the "Frenzy Mode" multiplier. You can also select from a set of power-ups, with a new power-up planned to release every week. Since the game is free-to-play, you can probably bet on those being purchasable. The game will feature Facebook Connect integration as well, for score tracking and friends leaderboards.
EA has released a pay version of Tetris on the iOS and Android devices, and Blitz will use the "one-touch" block dropping controls from those games. For those who prefer more traditional Tetris controls, you can choose to use the "swipe" control option instead.
"Tetris Blitz wraps all of the best elements of the iconic Tetris game inside a bite-sized, frenzied experience that is perfect for smartphones and tablets," said EA All Play senior VP Nick Earl, in the announcement. "The crisp graphics, innovative new controls and social leaderboards are bound to make Tetris Blitz a captivating gaming experience for longtime Tetris fans and newcomers alike."
