Batman Arkham game coming this year, Time Warner says

The "next release in the Batman Arkham franchise" is coming this year, according to a Warner investment call.

Batman: Arkham City followed about two years after Arkham Asylum, which means we're about due for another game revolving around Gotham's favorite insanity hotspot. Warner has confirmed that another title in the franchise is due this year, though it hasn't given much else in the way of official info.

"We also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise," Time Warner CFO John K. Martin said in an earnings call. It's unclear if Martin was referring to the calendar year or the fiscal year, the latter of which could go into March of 2014.

VG247 also cites sources claiming that Rocksteady isn't developing this game. We had previously heard rumors that the next Arkham game would be a prequel set in the Silver Age, detailing Batman's first confrontation with the Joker. This was purportedly part of an effort to team Batman up with other DC heroes, as was common practice during the Silver Age of comic books. That report also claimed the game would not be coming until 2014 at the earliest.

Which in all reason ought to be a 4-player campaign co-op TMNT third person melee game with unique moves and combos and all kinds of foot soldier clan types and old school bosses and all this shit done in the Batman engine.

Warner owns Rocksteady, Activision just got the TMNT license. In other words, it's not gonna happen.

because hopefully they are working on next-gen stuff like most awesome developers. This is a weird time for AAA studios and I bet a lot of their B teams are being used for shit coming out in the next 8 months.

On the bright side at least its a game with an established formula and ready to go tech. Its not like there is a lot of room to screw it up.

hell NO ! Halo4 was imho worst in the series, then again, they kept getting worse even when Bungie was running the show.
I was replaying the Halo:CE anniversary with my son not long ago (Legendary) and damn, that still is a fine game, the pacing and the openness of the whole ordeal. You could backtrack for a whole level just to pick up some obscure ammo or weapon, that doesn't happen any more, enemies disappear, doors shut behind you etc. its awful.

I have a problem with the idea of a prequel, but I'm slightly curious as to see what they would do with a Silver Age aesthetic. Obviously, it will make no fucking sense if he's super technology powered in the last two Arkham games and we go back to some Dick Tracy shit with the Silver Age.

Also, a team up where he's not acting like an absolute dick to everyone else involved is not a good team up.

Not keen on another studio doing this, but aside from that, can you really mix Silver Age with what we're used to in the current games? Or is it more just the aspect of bringing in other characters? That might be okay, but why take it to another studio.

I guess unless Rocksteady doesn't want to be 'that studio that only did Batman'... but like that's a bad thing since they've done it SO well?

Rocksteady built a pretty strong foundation for other teams to follow, guys. Arkham City was a bigger Asylum, so whatever comes next should spring from the mold pretty easily. Let's wait and see some gameplay videos and read some previews before jumping to conclusions.

      Crazy talk, I know.

It all depends on who the dev team is. Could be a situation like CoD where IW hands off to a capable Treyarch. Then again, it could be a case like where Gearbox outsources (allegedly) to some other guys and we end up with Aliens: Colonial Marines.

I'm not going to shit on it prematurely, but a new dev doesn't get any of the assumptions of quality that Rocksteady would, either.

While it's weird to think of Rocksteady not doing the next Arkham entry, I'm wholly interested in a prequel. Doubly so if it actually covers the Silver Age. I just can't see them making a campy Silver Age-era entry in the series - but a rather mature take on the Silver Age.

Think the Joker origin reinvention that was Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke" and Frank Miller's "Year One" as inspiration. Mmmhm.
