According to a lawsuit filed against them it seems AOL has been using Netscape to monitor transfers. But not just on their own websites, all websites. Every time you download anything.
The "SmartDownload" feature in the Netscape Communicator Web browser secretly transmits file download information to Netscape and America Online (which acquired Netscape in 1998), it states. [snip] "...The contents of an Internet server's computer -- which contains communications between the site and the user -- is being compromised."

Mosaic was good... until Netscape came along.
Netscape (3.01) was good... until IE came along.
IE was good... until Opera (4.0 final) came along. (3.0 betas were buggy)
Opera... is still good. (but IE is required to view some bastardized sites)
I paid for Opera in order to support the dev effort of a fatfree and 99.99% compliant non-MS browser. Give it a try - http://www.opera.com and if you're a cheapass bastard you can easily find a working keygen crack.
