Nintendo expects to sell 4 million Wii U consoles by the end of its fiscal year on March 31st. While that's an impressive figure, it's down from an initial projection of 5.5 million due to "lower-than-expected sales."

According to new data [PDF] released by the company, 3.06 million units of Nintendo's new home console have been shipped worldwide so far. The most popular games are unsurprisingly New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land, both which have sold more than two million units each. (In fact, with 11.69 million units of Wii U software sold so far, these two first-party titles represent a whopping 37 percent of total software sales so far!)

Part of the sluggish momentum for Wii U could be blamed on lackluster post-launch software support. Nintendo has publicly apologized for the sparse amount of recent releases, but promises that new Mario and Zelda games are on the way.

This is something we all want but instead we get a remake of.....WW. Great game don't get me wrong I finished it after many late nights but it's nowhere near as awesome as ALttP. Rose colored glasses? No, it really is an amazing game.

Play it on Gamecube, I thoroughly enjoyed that version. I can't imagine myself liking the tacked on motion controls.

Nintendo really needs to expand it's base by the end of the year if they want to remain relevant while the next Playstation and Xbox are on the scene. I can see them becoming a distant third in sales, unless TVii and similar features really manage to grab the casual crowd, their first party games won't be enough.

They should get out of the hardware business and make games for Sony/ ms right?

Not until they have some reason to buy the system will I pick one up. NSMB alone isn't compelling enough, when almost every other title worth having is on the PS3 or 360, and probably 6 months beforehand.

On the horizon, there's things I want the WiiU for, but I'm going to wait until those games show up, given Nintendo's penchant for hardware revisions.

Wind Waker HD will be well worth the price of admission. I just hope that can bring Metroid back to its SNES glory days.

Nintendo's penchant for hardware revision isn't that much prevalent for home consoles though. Or at least, never in a manner that is obvious (Wii had several iterations, but only the latest had LESS opportunities with the GC features disappearing)

That said, you may benefit at least from a price drop and a bigger (and more interesting) library on the horizon.
