New Super Mario and Mario Kart announced for Wii U

You'll never guess what, right. Nintendo is making a new Super Mario game and a new Mario Kart game. Cross my heart! I can't give you any useful details about either, okay, but I swear it's true, Nintendo really is making more games in those long, long, long-running series. May Queen Elizabeth herself strike me down if one word of a lie has crossed my lips.

The mysterious new Super Mario is coming from the team behind Super Mario Galaxy (pictured above) and Super Mario 3D Land. The 3D game will be playable at E3 this year, but that's all we know.

As for the new Mario Kart, we know even less. It'll be playable at E3. And that's all we know.

Check out the Nintendo Direct stream for the low-key announcements.

I do not wish death upon you, Alice, but I would pay money to see Queen Elizabeth dressed in her finest sneaking suit, rappel through a balcony window and skewer someone with a broadsword.

I played a ton more battle mode in the N64 version than SMK personally, I think it depends on which one of those you grew up with.

It's a toss up with Double Dash IMO. Actually the only one that isn't that great is the Wii edition.

Funny, I can't imagine going back to joystick controls after playing the revelation that is Mario Kart Wii.

And the SNES original was fantastic in its time, but IMO it's really dated and doesn't do anything the sequels haven't done better.

so pretty much the opposite opinion over here.

What revelation, tilt controls? You gotta have the fast thumb stick movement for quick power slide adjustments. I didn't think the tilt was good for that.

Perhaps, but I didn't prefer the Wii Wheel controls because of greater precision or a gameplay advantage, I preffered them because I thought it was more fun to drive with a physical wheel in your hands.

It doesn't matter though, because I'm sure MK Wii U will support a full range of control options just like MK Wii did. Everyone will get to choose the scheme that suits them so there's no sense debating which is better.

The only option that we'll lose is the GameCube controller, but I can't imagine why that would be so important since we'll still have the Wii Classic Controller and the Wii U Pro Controller.

double dash was my favourite. liked switching the drivers up and doing it helped you use and horde your items more strategically.

It made races crazy. It didn't really matter who you chose, you'd have different abilities that messed with the balance of the race.

I think they may be riding Mario a bit too hard these last few years and it may not be the big gun they need if they are bringing another one this fall.

This E3 is going to be really interesting.

I can see that opinion, but NSMB U is the best 2D mario game since Yoshi's island, and really captures the feel of Mario World.

If they pull off the next one again as well I'm all for it.

I don't think it quite got to that SMW feeling but it definitely was the best one since Yoshi's Island for sure.

The 3D games and the "New" series are different franchises in my mind. Different teams work on them, and every 3D game has been top-shelf.

      Nomenclature is a bit confusing.

You see there is a sub series for Mario called "New Super Mario Bros." So when you announce that there is a new Super Mario game coming, there will be confusion. Nintendo wants to see the world burn.

It's highly likely that Retro is working on that, the other options are another DKC (which I doubt at this point but it could happen) or another franchise that hasn't seen the light of day in a long time, most likely F-Zero or Star Fox.
