To tie 2012 up all nice with a bow before burying it in the woods out back, Microsoft has revealed the most popular Xbox Live, Xbox Live Arcade, Xbox Live Indie Games, and Games for Windows Live titles from that dead year, dead dead dead dead. Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the most-played Live game, while, you've guessed it, Minecraft topped XBLA.
Xbox Live director Larry 'Major Nelson' Hyrb revealed the stats on his blog, showing the top 20 for each platform. Stats based on online users don't show a complete view of what people are playing, but it's the best Microsoft can track.
Activision's Call of Duty series had three games in the Xbox Live top 5, with 2011's Modern Warfare 3 in at #2 and the original Black Ops at #5. Halo 4 squeezed in at #3, and Minecraft was #4. The Xbox Live stats come from the average number of unique users per day, gathered by tracking people who are online on Live.
Mining was pretty dang popular on XBLIG too, with dig 'em ups accounting for four of the top five most-sold games.
As for GFWL, well, it's hardly worth mentioning, given that most reasonable publishers have long since fled the platform. Still, Grand Theft Auto 4 had the most average unique users, followed by Dark Souls, Age of Empires Online, Batman: Arkham City, and Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition.
Do check out Major Nelson's post for the full top 20 on each platform.
