Borderlands 2 producer promises level cap increase

Borderlands 2 is getting a level cap increase for 'quite a few levels,' says associate producer James Lopez.

If you've been playing through Borderlands 2 on True Vault Hunter mode, playing each downloadable expansion to completion, and taking on raid bosses, chances are you've already hit the level 50 cap. We're about due for an increase, and Gearbox associate producer James Lopez has stated that one is on the way -- possibly very soon.

"We do have one planned, and it will be for quite a few levels which will allow you play for quite a bit longer," Lopez told Official PlayStation Magazine. "We also have a plan for Q1." It's unclear if Lopez means that the level cap increase will come in Q1, which would mean it's due by March, or if the increase would come later and other plans are in the works for this quarter. Shacknews has contacted Gearbox to clarify.

Lopez says that the Shift system gives the developer better insight about how players are progressing than judging by achievements and base its content on that feedback. "We wanted to give people enough time to get at least one level 50 in there, and then see from there, how many people are doing this," he said. "Is this a good time for this? We also didn't want to wait so long that people were no longer interested, or felt like it wasn’t coming."

The game's latest piece of downloadable content, Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, came out this week. Check out my impressions for more details.

Hammerlock isn't the final DLC, there's still one more in the season pass... but to answer your question, no, it's not =/

Isn't this supposed to come in a patch before the last DLC in the Season Pass? I remember hearing something to that effect.

I just checked my character stats last night for the first time while waiting for a friend to get online. I did a triple take making sure that the number I was looking at was actually days. Clocked almost five full days on one character, and another 3 on a second...

They better be giving me retroactive XP for all the shit I've been doing. :( I hate it when games raise the level cap way after I hit it.

God I wish... They ARE supposed to add a third playthrough, for whatever that's worth.

I should think they would have to so people can redo the missions that give unique weapons.

I have 40 Keys I'm saving for when I hit the next Cap. Nothing I get now is an upgrade.

They've been handing out plenty of them since launch. I've used probably 15-20 and I still have at least 20 left.

I still don't see the point in saving them. By the time you hit the next cap, you'll find just as good shit as you did getting to the current cap. I've used a dozen keys and nothing I got was kept long before something in the wild was better.

... i use my keys on lower characters when i need something better... using them at cap is pretty useless if you've been farming at all....

I grabbed BL2 on the 50% steam sale, and on a whim picked up the mechromancer pack too but not the Seasons Pass..

Have enjoyed it so far, just finishing first time through and starting on TVHM - would it be better to pick up the season pass and do that first, or play through TVHM?

I believe the DLCs scale to your character's levels so I don't know if it matters.

They are capped to 35 on your first playthrough, best to wait until you've finished TVHM

I still haven't started this game, might be the next one on the list. I don't even know what all this "key" business means. I'm all for higher levels in any game though. MAXIMUM POWER.

The keys are given out through twitter/facebook (and gearbox site) that open a chest in the main town sanctuary. it gives only purple (epic) gear or E-tech (alien technology) guns...

Like all the other ones it's accessible through the Fast Travel Station. It's called Hunter's Grotto or something.
