- I agree about Season 6. It was a chore to watch. That said, Spike is generally forgiven for the 'rape' scene because Joss Whedon spent the better part of 5 seasons showing that Buffy is physically stronger than Spike, and the better part of Season 6 putting Spike on the wrong side of a physically and emotionally abusive relationship. For all the play the 'rape' in Seeing Red (I think that's the episode name) got, there are no less than 5 episodes in which Buffy initiates aggressive sexual action with Spike without bothering for even a modicum of consent. People conveniently forget that in the case of the Buffy universe, the woman is the stronger sex in these cases...
- That said, I also dislike good Spike. Not so much because it's not believable any body would forgive him and offer him a chance at redemption (this is the Buffy universe, after all.... looking at you, Angel), but mostly because they reduced a really charismatic and multi-layered villain from Season 2 into a puppy-love stricken comedy character. I mean, they already had Xander for that. There are stories floating around out there that the original plan for the end of Season 6 and Season 7 was not for Spike to get a soul back, but for him to be tempted by The First Evil, and become that entity's physical cypher in exchange for ridding him of both his feelings for Buffy and the chip. But then Firefly got cancelled and all Joss' buddies needed work, so he rewrote it. I would have loved to see Spike as the final big bad in Season 7, waylaying Buffy's world piece by piece in Season 2 fashion.
- Totally disagree about the mayor, I thought it was exactly self-referential enough. A perfect mix of a nice, friendly guy on the service, with a dark, creepy underside. Combined with the Faith arc, I thought he was a fantastic 'big bad'. Season 3 may not hit quite the highs of Season 2 (and we all know I'm talking about Angel turning, here), but it was more consistent quality across the board.
