Weekend Confirmed 146 - 2013 begins, Dishonored, next-gen predictions

Garnett Lee, Jeff Cannata, and "Indie" Jeff Mattas are joined by Nikole Zivalich this week to talk about games like Dishonored and the brilliant new indie title, Hundreds. Much of this episode's discussion centers around predictions for the future of gaming, including possible next-steps for gaming hardware and peripherals, as well as what sort of changes might help reinvigorate the MMO genre in the coming years. Finishing Moves wraps up the show, followed by a WildCard edition of the post-show NFL TailGate.

It's the same thing! And it's a thing people *love* about that game. Maybe it's not so archaic?

It's not the game itself, or the gameplay:story ratio or whatever that's the problem, it's the attitudes of people like Jeff that are going to drive away traditional, gameplay-driven games. The idea that any mechanic that diminishes or prevents progress is inherently outdated and bad. Well, suppose developers decide to acquiesce to the Jeff Cs of the world and remove all possibility of failure or getting stuck from games. I ask, at what the hell point is a game not a game anymore?
I'm not saying I want games to be stagnant or retrogressive, but there's a difference between learning from the past, and chucking the whole damn thing in the trash.
Dark Souls is a game that learns from the past. It takes it's roots from games like Ghosts and Goblins, but rethinks the fail state in a way that takes both classic and modern game design into consideration. Gone are lives or continues, inventory is persistent, and your souls are recoup-able, so long as you can make it back to your corpse, but at the same time, checkpoints are strategically staggered, and progress only happens when you earn it.
