Report: Microsoft acquires entertainment start-up
by Steve Watts, Jan 03, 2013 8:35am PSTMicrosoft is continuing to plunge ahead in its attempts to use its Xbox brand as a one-stop entertainment box, and a new acquisition may help it reach that goal. The company has reportedly acquired R2 Studios, a start-up that was previously focused on mobile apps that enable home automation.
The Wall Street Journal (via Gamasutra) reports that the acquisition includes several electronic control patents. The studio was founded by Slingbox creator Blake Krikorian. Slingbox focused on video streaming, and web and mobile apps that could serve as remote controls.
Meanwhile, ZDnet reports that R2 had been working on similar automation apps, placing another potential tool in Microsoft's arsenal of features that began with Kinect controls. As Microsoft prepares to reveal its next console, it seems likely to focus on entertainment as a major pillar.
