Madden NFL 11, FIFA 11 servers shutting down

EA is shutting down a host of 2010 and 2011 EA Sports servers, including Madden, FIFA, NBA Live, and NBA Jam.

It's that time of year again, when we shed off the remnants of last year and look ahead towards things to come. Out with the old, in with the new! In the case of EA Sports games, that means the annual culling of servers from older sports titles. If you prefer the 2011 iterations of games like Madden NFL and FIFA Soccer 11, you have just over one precious week to get in your online game time.

Electronic Arts gives word (via Games Industry International) that the 2011 EA Sports line-up and remaining 2010 servers will be shut down on January 11. This includes Madden, FIFA, and NHL 11, along with the "Ultimate Team" iterations of each. Also facing shut downs are NCAA Football 11, NBA Jam, and NBA Live 10.

EA confirmed to Shacknews that the NBA Jam shut down only impacts the original version, and not the On Fire edition that recently joined the PlayStation Plus collection. Due to EA's cancellation of subsequent NBA Live titles, this will leave EA out of the basketball court entirely until NBA Live 14 comes along.

Any next contract MS has with EA should specifically preclude them from having their own server controls.

If EA pulls a 'well we won't make anything for your system then' MS should just call them on it and move along, they'll cave. It's better for the consumer.

It'd be nice to see EA include number of users impacted by the servers being shutdown. For all we know only 10 people are playing the oldest Maddens online.

Seeing as Madden 11 sold over 5 million copies from Aug thru Dec of the launch, 1% would be at least 50K, with less than 1% being too vague to quantify. It could be as much as 60K (or more) or 1 lonely Madden 11 player.

1% is 50k assuming every user went online and stayed online until now is like a crazy upper bound. Probably more like half ever went online at all and those are the more hardcore (ie more likely to have bought Madden 12/13).

It's lame but I really doubt it's affecting many people at all.
