Sony finally stops PS2 production in Japan

Sony has halted shipping the PlayStation 2 in Japan, signaling an end to retail sales of one of the longest-lasting consoles ever made.

One of the longest-lasting and highest-selling game consoles of all time is finally preparing for retirement. Sony has stopped shipping the PlayStation 2 in Japan, leaving only the current stock on shelves left to sell before the hardware is unavailable at retail.

The console originally launched on March 4, 2000 across the Pacific, giving the PS2 a more-than-12 year life cycle. Over those years, the console has sold approximately 150 million units. With Famitsu's report on the console's ceased production (via Ars Technica), it's clear that the days of being able to walk into a store and pick up a brand new PS2 are numbered.

Trying to recall the last time I used my PS2. Jumped on that bandwagon really late (didn't get a PS2 until 2006 when Bully came out).

Definitely got my money's worth between Bully and all of the original Guitar Hero games and God Of War 1 & 2.

As long as I have Persona 3 and 4, the PS2 will be safe.

These last versions are gimped compared to the models release in 2008 and before. I think it was 2008 that the removed the ability to boot software via memory card.

Definitely check out GS Modeselector y'all, playing Gradius V and Odin Sphere in 480p is glorious.

I picked up a PS2 not more than 2 years ago at gamestop for less than the price of a new game. I really didn't know which one to get and random dude #17 says Dude, get the fatty. They're the best. They just kept gimping them after that. And so that's what I did. Of course, I only play persona on it, so I don't think it matter's too much.

I am still rocking my fat PS2 next to my PS3. Maybe I should buy a slim while I have a chance encase it breaks.

This reminds me... I hadn't realized that the Intel 386 processor was still being manufactured until 2007.
