Where's the V5 6000?
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 06, 2000 5:03pm PDTIf you were wondering if the Voodoo 5 6000 was ever gonna show up, so was Billy at Voodoo Extreme and so he asked 3dfx's Brian Burke. Here's what Brian had to say
3dfx is concentrating on maximizing revenues while we ride out our component shortage and executing on future product releases. For the near future, this means making sure the 5500 series is successful. I do not think it is any secret that giving out dates prematurely has hurt our company in the past. The V5 6000 product is in development. We will be releasing the V5 6000 this summer. When the release date solidifies, we will make sure everyone knows what it is.

I wouldn't even trade my V5-5500 for that fancy new 5ns GeForce2 that Tom Pabst had because it still wouldn't look as good as the V5.
And the V5-5500 is still fast enough to play Q3 and anything else I care to throw at it at very respectable framerates and without having to tweak it to death. Deus Ex comes to mind...
I'm gonna swap up to a V5-6000 when it finally comes out just because I want that fire-breathing buffed-out videocard! (it helps that I have a buyer ready for the 5500 too!) ;)
It's rough being a pimp...
hehe

Voodoo not-so-scalable architecture. They have yet to scale their scalable architecture at all. Even the Voodoo 4 is DOA. I'm thinking they're going to completely skip the Voodoo 4. Just look at the GF2 MX. Would you release what is essentially a TNT2 Ultra to complete with a GF2 MX? Especially when your TNT2 Ultra will retail for $30 more. I'd have shit my pants if I were 3dfx when the first reviews of the MX appeared. The $100-150 value market is a cash cow. Or at least more of one than the $250+ market, and WAY above the minute low profit (if you make a dime, period) $600 market.
Getting four chips to work in harmony and do it all fast has to be a bitch. They just don't have the engineering time to blow on getting it all working when they're not going to make a dime selling maybe 800-1000 units. The 6000 has always been a trophy product. It's not supposed to make them money. It's supposed to let them hold the "we've got a bigger cock" award until the NV20 comes out.
Now suddenly 3dfx realizes that they have to worry more about staying afloat than waving their spear around. They can't eat the losses associated with producing the 6000 (aka loss-leader-trophy-product-o-matic).
Alas, it would've been a great card for those who could afford it. It ain't gunna see the light of day. In fact, I'm almost betting that 3dfx is going belly up real soon.

stupid old threads...
R@D to Patents (copyrights) to Alpha Silicon to Product.
When the first step of this equation is behind your compeditors, you have already lost the race BEFORE it has begun. Only time will tell is 3dfx survives, and their purchase of 'Gigapixel' can once again revive the R@D to revive the company.

3dfx are dead to me
harsh but true at the moment
Rosewood has it. Forget about it
3dfx played nVidia last night on Field 1 at Twin Creeks softball complex in San Jose and it wasn't pretty. The final score was 24 to 8. In the bottom of the 4th inning (nVidia was the home team), the score was 17 to 2! nVidia was never ahead because 3dfx scored early and often. 3dfx averaged four to five runs per inning and had two home runs. 3dfx's pitcher even threw a no-swing strikeout (i.e., she went down looking in two pitches). And if that wasn't enough, 3dfx turned a 6-3-5 double play (i.e., from shortstop to first base to third base) to end the game.
The umpire called the game after the end of the 5th inning under the "Mercy" rule: If a team, after five complete innings, is ahead by at least 10 runs, the game will be over.
the Voodoo6 is already well baked
they dont want to release it so that they might sell some 5500's first
