Epic Games president Mike Capps retiring

Epic Games president Mike Capps has announced his retirement, continuing a streak of high-profile departures from the studio responsible for the Unreal engine and the Gears of War franchise. Production director Rod Fergusson left in August to join BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games, while Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski left two months ago to begin his "next stage of his career."

Capps is ending a ten year run at Epic, transitioning into "an advisory role" while remaining on the Epic board of directors.

Speaking on the company's official website (via Polygon), he says that he currently plans on being "a stay at home dad for a while," and may get into teaching, creative writing, and spend more time with charities. His sentiments seem to echo those of the BioWare's co-founders, who both retired from the industry in September.

While some may view the exodus from Epic Games as a sign of things to come, Capps points out that he is "truly excited about our future games and Unreal Engine 4."

      Just when I was wondering what the hell Epic's direction was going to be... Rein ends up running the show, lock stock and barrel. I see less of a possibility of returning to the Unreal franchise, considering how there are fewer and fewer people left who truly knew the spirit of the first Unreal and UT99 (and of those still there, how many of them went full-on hardcore Gears before burning out on that and transitioning to Fortnite?).

        Epic has an extremely clear and simple direction. Follow the money.

        id sort of lost their way, but it's not easy to pin-point when. I think a lot of people would say Doom 3, but imho it started all the way back to Quake 2. The mod scene absolutely flourished and gave birth to just about every FPS sub-genre out today. Quake was no longer id's game, but instead the communities.

        IMO right then and their id should have taken a different road. Old interviews talk about how they had ideas and wanted to try different genre's, but felt obligated to continue on in the FPS scene.

          It was clearly Doom3. Quake3 was an awesome mp game, and the engine completely dominated. Doom3 came out, and then they pretty much dropped it and either supported their third party IP or worked on the giant boondoggle that was RAGE. There was so much awesome potential in the idTech4 engine, but it was never really iterated on by third party developers or id proper. It's a damn shame, because there's stuff in it that I still miss when using other engines.

            What happened is id not only went from MP to SP with Doom 3, John also went an entirely different direction with the lighting for Doom 3 vs every other engine (global lighting, I believe?) and id decided to pretty much kill off their engine support and focus on their own game instead of making idtech a major supported engine with good tools. They also focused on the PC just as the current generation was in development.

            Epic went exactly the opposite direction. They decided to focus on making a well supported engine and focused on support for it. Additionally they focused heavily on console investment and multi-platform support.

            tl;dr: Epic found the perfect business model for this generation of development and knocked it out of the park.

        As long as Unreal 3 learns from the mediocre design decisions that plagued Unreal 2, I'll be alright with another Unreal.

        don't ask for it. it's been so long since the last one, and things have changed. if they make it, it would probably be a call of duty clone. it's sad, but it's very likely

      They got tired of pimping and yelling about NEW HARDWARE! BUY NEW HARDWARE!
      Besides, they can see the writing on the wall. Shit is going digital and if rumors are to be believed the market is about to get real segregated.
      Either you making apps for IPads or making games for Wii U (at this point). Cause M$ and SONY have some strange plans coming down the pike. Shit like Xbox TV for the casual players/app users and a pricey as hell console for the "core" players?
      Whatever man, go play with your kids, its about that time.
