I've said it before, I can't emphasize it enough, you have to LET GO of the need to finish every game you start. You want to have fun playing Dark Souls or ZombieU or Spelunky or AC3 or whatever, it's not that hard to do:
Just Be In The Moment.
Don't think about how far you've gone or how much farther there is to go, don't worry about whether you're making progress, and for the love of whichever god floats your boat, stop treating your lost progress as a waste of time! It's not like you're being any more productive when you do finish games. It's just a game, try to enjoy the journey.

Take a story game though and every bit you have to repeat is less fun the 2nd, 3rd, ect time. For me it's because once I experience and get through a section I don't have any desire to do it again, I want the next part. So if checkpoints are too far apart or if it's a game like Dark Souls I get the feeling I have to do stuff I don't want to do again because I've already seen it. I don't want to go through the motions just to get the next part of the game. Doing stuff I don't want to do in my free time is a waste of time.
