With the end-of-the-year holidays come end-of-the-year sales. Yay! In that spirit, Nintendo is hoping to entice you to purchase one of their plus-sized handhelds by unveiling a limited-edition 3DS XL Bundle that comes with Mario Kart 7, pre-installed. Folks interested grabbing the bundle will be able to choose between either black or blue color schemes for the device. The MSRP for the 3DS XL is normally $199.99, and Mario Kart 7 retails for $39.99, so the bundle is basically a great way to save forty bucks if you were thinking about getting the system and Mario's latest Kart outing anyway. Not a bad little bonus, if you ask us. The 3DS XL Bundle will be available at retail on December 2. For more on the XL, read our hardware review.

An example of how size can matter.

I loved it. Totally an improvement over the regular 3DS - http://www.shacknews.com/article/75089/nintendo-3ds-xl-review-bigger-and-better

Hard to compare to Vita though. The 3DS library is incredible, but Vita has multimedia capabilities and an amazing 540p OLED screen. Toss in PlayStation Plus, and the two systems are competitive, but for totally different reasons.

I don't but from what I've heard, with the exception of the massive twin-joystick add-on it's considerably better to hold.

Tried it at Best Buy and it's awesome. The screen is more luxurious. The 3d pops out more than my regular 3ds. I really want that Professor Layton game.

I have been having a great time with my 3DSXL. I can't speak about the normal version of the system or the Vita but if you are a fan of hand helds than i'd suggest it wholeheartedly. There is a good back catalog, I have built a pretty nice little collection of games (got them cheap on ebay) and there will be some great releases next year. I own MGS:Snake Eater, Resident Evil Revelations, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Starfox64, and NSMB2. I'd recommend any of them and Im really looking forward to the new Super Smash and Castlevania hopefully coming soon.

Plus, you have to show your respect for the big N. They know gaming, understand what it should be, and are not afraid to take take a chance.

Sorta sucks that of the three games I bought a 3DS for one got cancelled, one's a remake, and the other doesn't even have a release date (MML3, OoT3D, and Animal Crossing.) So I only own OoT3D and KH3D. But my god is KH3D stupid fun.

Sales are great but I'm extremely annoyed at the new trend of adding games and keeping the hardware price the same.

I'd just like a discount on the hardware - I would prefer to pick out my own games at much cheaper prices. I fail to see how this is a good deal UNLESS, I repeat UNLESS you really wanted the bundled games. Then, yeah, it's pretty sweet.

But if you just wanted to pick up the hardware as a gift for someone or something, it's frustrating.

Then you should have got one during Black Friday. Target had them on sale for $175.

I get where you're coming from, but Mario Kart 7 makes for a great starter game. It's Mario Kart--inoffensive, fun, multiplayer, and a fantastic way to demo the 3D capabilities of the system. What's not to like?

Maybe it's just not a game you want?

Sure, but it's the same price as the hardware so it's not like you're paying for a game you don't want. Or, you could buy the plain Jane handheld, no game included--same price.

That's the whole point. It's a sale but it still makes you pay them the same amount of money, and will have a lot of people "buying" Mario Kart that maybe otherwise wouldn't. Not a new concept.

This definitely makes Nintendo the first company to bundle digital versions of retail games with hardware, something I'm sure will be standard practice for the next wave of consoles.

      pre-installed

How well does something like this work in practice? Is it something you can delete, accidentally or no? Is it something that will be bad later because it's taking up space? Can you re-download it, App Store style?

I'd also like answers to those questions. I end up deleting games and re-downloading them later, so I'd want option.

I feel like there was a reason I wanted to pick up a 3DS but now I can't remember what it was. Animal Crossing? Pikmin? There was some new game that was only on the 3DS but now I have no idea what it was!!
