MechWarrior Online patch adds paintjobs

Sure, stomping around inside a storeys-high robot is pretty good, but wouldn't painting a storeys-high robot pretty colours be even more fun? Robot fanciers rejoice, for MechWarrior Online's latest patch added the ability to customise your pretty metal toys, if you can live with your lovelies being dinged and damaged out on the battlefield.

Robot fanciers rejoice, for MechWarrior Online's latest patch added the ability to customise your pretty metal toys, if you can live with your lovelies being dinged and damaged out on the battlefield. As of yesterday's patch, pilots can trick out their mechs with paint patterns, paint colours, and trinkets to decorate your cockpit. Some can be earned while others must be purchased, and developer Piranha is planning to release a whole lot more. Check out this forum post for details on cosmetic customisation. The 'Camo Spec' update also brings back the voice of Carrol Ruggier so your mech's computer can verbalise its concerns, as heard in MechWarrior 2. Piranha also delivered a nighttime variant of the map Frozen City, along with bug fixes and other jazz. Look, go read the full notes.

It all stays at this point. The final wipe happened when it went open beta.

It cost like 315,000 C-bills for each layer of paint, and there are 3 layers to choose from, so darn near a mil in c-bills for a full paint job. If you want to change colors later, that will be another 315,000 c-bills. Somewhat pricey but I guess that is what makes having a unique color special. I wish they did the same for patterns. Patterns currently cost actual MC, which is real world money.

It's not that expensive considering its not necessary, fairly cheap and is permanent until you change it.

Yeah, it's a bit pricey for non-Premium members I guess. When you have the Premium bonus though, you can make a million in a few matches.

I have already dropped $30 on this game, and have no premium benefits. I guess I am doing it wrong.

Buy MC and go premium. C-bill problems will be a thing of the past.

Do you mean buy Premium time? Because I can't guarantee myself that I will use the time wisely and it expires, does it not?

It does expire. I can't say if I use it "wisely" because it still comes out being worth it. 10-20k XP in a night and millions of cbills makes it worth the risk.

Yeah, seriously. I was looking for things to spend my c-bills on. A few times it added up to 4 or 5 million and I thought.. hmm... I should probably buy something I guess?

You can by modules once you unlock those, but the problem is you need GXP, which in the end, costs real money, if you want to speed the process up, otherwise you will just keep collection massive amounts of c-bills, if you have already bought all the weapons and ammo.

Yeah, I keep looking at the stuff you can buy with GXP but that stuff just takes FOREVER to add up. You must have to spend money to do anything with GXP because I've been playing quite a bit and I'm still not even close to unlocking something.

Use MC. Cost very little MC for a lot of GXP.

Yeah, I probably will. I still have a decent amount left over from my Founders package.

If you bought the founders pack for $30 like I did, they were giving you the XP bonuses up until this patch. Now the automatic XP bonuses are gone, but you have 30 days you can activate to get the bonus XP. You should have an "Activate" button on the launcher screen on the bottom toward the left.

You can also use some of your MC to buy boost, too.

What do people think of this compared to Hawken? I only played MWO right at the start of the beta, and there wasn't anything to it at that point, just walk slowly and shoot. Hawken had much better maneuverability and additional moves the mechs could pull off. I haven't played either in a long time, so I'm wondering how the two experiences compare right now.

Its really a slow paced strategy game, not an action fps. I hope they keep the simulation aspect in tact and do not go 3rd person views and faster action.

there is no comparison. both have robots thats it. hawken is just a notch below anime ninja robots in movement and gameplay theme. MWO is more giant single man tanks with human shapes.

i guess a comparison might be that MWO is more like Battlefield, whereas hawken is more like Unreal Tournament, as far as pacing though thats just a shitty anaology and neither are anything like those games.

They are totally different games. Hawken is cool, but it's basically Quake 3 with mechs. Actually they feel more like 'suits' than mechs because they are smaller and so fast. Mechwarrior is slower with a lot more tactics and strategy involved. It also feels a bit more grounded in reality, you can almost imagine these huge lumbering mechs existing and behaving the way they do. The weapons have a more realistic look and feel to them. Just as much of the game is about loading out your mech and choosing your role in the battle as it is the tactics while you are on the field. Teamwork also seems a bit more vital to survival in MWO where in Hawken it comes down to your fast twitch reflexes. Obviously reflexes in MWO help also, but it's just a small part of the game. Also heat is a bigger issue in MWO because you need to keep an eye on it and manage it closely.

They both come down to FPS action in a mech, though. I don't really think of MW as a simulator, though.
