The new Wii U is still a big thing, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo from announcing the release of a revamped Wii Mini for the holiday season. It will be available December 7 for only $99.99, but there is no Internet connectivity, and it's exclusive to Canada.

The Mini will play more than 1,400 disc-based Wii games, including Super Smash Bros Brawl, New Super Mario Bros and Wii Fit Plus, but it is not compatible with GameCube games. The black and red system is much smaller and designed to sit flat. It comes with a Wii Remote Plus and a standard nunchuck controller.

Nintendo offered no word on whether the console will be available in the United States at a later time, so if you want it for the holidays, be prepared to make a run to the northern border to grab one.

John Keefer posted a new article, Wii Mini coming for $100, but only in Canada.

      what is nintendo doing

to be honest, I think this is a cool idea, but it's years too late at the point where the wii is supposed to be irrelevant for nintendo, they should have released a smaller wii of some sort 2 years after the original wii

This might be a cool arcade machine for trips. Pickup a small 7" screen and carry case. Load it up with homebrew and wiiware/VC games. But for $100 you could also pickup a used wii for cheap and have wifi and gamecube compatibility.

Might have made sense earlier this year, but doing it right after the release of the Wii U(which is already going to have a lot of marketplace confusion) is just dumb. And Canada exclusive is a bizarre half-measure - why even bother?

for $20 more you get the full sized one that comes with a game and internet connectivity. why would anyone bother?

yes, because both things are dumb. Their online support/services are generally below average, that doesn't mean we're better off without any online functionality. The Wii gets used a significant amount for Netflix watching in a lot of cases even by casual folks.

I dont know much about supply and demand and manufacturing. I had one economics class in college and barely survived it.

However...one would assume that this is taking away funding that could be used to produce and supply more WiiUs for the holiday season. Which is annoying as fuck. There are tons of people who are waiting for Wii U's and with it looking like they are gonna be near impossible to find for awhile its frustrating they are are using this many resources to launch a new mini Wii console rather than supplying more U units.

With Wal-Mart selling a white Wii for $89 WHY would anyone want to buy the mini? At least you can watch Netflix, play online games, and buy WiiWare and Virtual Console titles with a normal Wii.

Pretty good plan, since many parts of Canada now have AC power available, but few have internet access, as it costs way to send bits that far north. Sadly, most Canadians will therefore not see this article and remain unaware of this nice new console.

What the hell? I'm from Canada and we have all the same service that you have in the US

We do have AC power, fiber internet and all the other telecommunication.
But yup it’s true we probably have to pay way more for the same stuff.

        It’s Canada... not Africa...

Ha, this is such insignificant news and it's got everyone so worked up. Just say "Nintendo" and half the Shack starts twitching and foaming at the mouth.

This is a weird little product like the Game Boy Micro. I don't know why they're making it but if you guys want to make a huge fuss over this, I can't stop you.

Well, that's true. No one confused the Game Boy Micro with the DS, but the branding was much more distinct in that case.

Nonetheless I doubt the release of this thing is going to make or break the Wii U. But that's a valid point and I shouldn't have belittled it.

Yeah I feel bad for the kids who will inevitably get one of these instead of a wii U because they asked for "the new wii."

It will be a small number, but I bet it will happen.

I think the "no internet connection" is to stop it from being softmodded. You need the MAC address to generate the fake system update that allows you to install the homebrew channel.
