Doom 3: BFG Edition source code released

As it does so very kindly like to do, id Software has released another dollop of engine source code. This latest is somewhat less exciting than many, simply offering the updated Doom 3 source from the BFG Edition but hey, now the folks at home can make the best and shiniest D3 games yet.

As with id's other recent source releases, it's up on GitHub for your coding conveniences. Or you can download the full pack from Shacknews. Of course, just because the engine source has been released, it doesn't mean BFG Edition is free--all the game data and assets are still protected.

Id has also dropped a new patch for the BFG Edition on PC, bringing fixes and a whole heap of new menu options to play with.

It's a steaming heap of ID garbage. Trust me the improvements to the doom version is actually a downgrade from the 6 year old version. The textures are even worst and they took out dynamic lighting so do the math. Plus you can' t even use the mods that game it a REAL graphic update. ID is dead to me, they did this for a quick cash cow and it shows. Even the included missing levels are not in any way detailed or feel complete, they basically took what they cut out and put it in the box.

          That is unfortunate.

To be fair, this was most likely the move of ZeniMax which acquired id software 3 years ago and probably wanted to profit a little from the Doom franchise. Probably outside of id's control.

There were map changes, gameplay changes and engine changes to support the 3D glasses that Carmack is talking up. id had a definite hand in this.

id has been dead to me since Rage. I would have purchased this edition had it included some quality material, like the 'Doom3 Classic' levels.

Really? This game was great when it originally released. It still looks great today and the BFG edition has a few visual improvements and a full time flashlight the kids. It's 30 bucks or less, plus you get Doom 1&2 because id software probably wants it's buyers to get the most out of their money.

At what point is a AAA title built with one of the most ground breaking 3D engines, by a team who pretty much gave birth to the FPS genre, and holds a 85%+ Metacritic score worth opening your wallet a little? Oh never mind, I forgot this was the internet and I'm probably speaking to Evil Avatar. ;-P

I thought that the visuals were supposed to be worst in this version -- with compressed textures from the consoles. Is this incorrect?

No idea, but one bad review from an anonymous source is usually all it takes to dissuade most people from buying it, especially if they already have 90% of the game to begin with.

Well, you know... a couple of the members of the team who pretty much gave birth to the FPS genre, but close enough.
