Mega Man games to (eventually) appear on consoles, handhelds

The Mega Man series is dormant but not dead, according to Capcom's Christian Svensson, who has said that the character will still appear on consoles and handhelds.

Mega Man is having a pretty depressing 25th anniversary so far. After the cancellation of both Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe last year, Capcom's classic mascot has all but disappeared. He's made a humorous cameo appearance in Street Fighter X Tekken, but his most recent game was Mega Man Xover, an iOS mash-up. Where does the character go from here?

"I can say with certainty that you've not seen the last of the Blue Bomber on consoles and handhelds, and, with luck, we'll be celebrating his 50th anniversary, including all of the games you’re going to enjoy over the next 25 years," Capcom's Christian Svensson told Nintendo Power (via Siliconera). "That said, an issue we've had in the past has been talking about games and announcing them before we're certain they're going to come out, which unfortunately has lead to profound disappointment for many fans. So for now, I'm going to have to stay mum about any details."

That statement may be vague, but it's more concrete than Mega Man fans have heard recently. The talk of disappointment is clearly a nod to the backlash over the cancellation of Legends 3, but that was fueled in part by the cult series being dormant for so long before its sequel was finally announced. It's hard to say just what Capcom has planned, but the commitment to consoles and handhelds at least means we won't have to use virtual buttons.

One of my favorite game characters if I ignore 75% of the riff raff. Here's hoping.

I still have my fingers crossed for Mega Man 11. I'd even take a new X game, although I prefer the classic series.

New X game would be awesome! You old farts have gotten two NES-style games already, let those of us who grew up with MMX on the SNES have some retro fun.

Actually, just get X3 on the Virtual Console first. Do it Capcom.

X3 was the best MMX game.

maybe, but MMX had the best music, best levels and was a breath of fresh air at the time. Also some cool cyber-punkish themes, which I think were lost in favor of more sci-fi ones.

So long as it's like the stuff that showed up on the SNES... and not everything after MMX4.

Definitely. I'm not familiar with the post-SNES titles but I heard they suck. 16-bit is the way to go.

X4 was still good, but it definitely felt "off", after that things just got loopy.

IMO X4 and X6 are good. but X5 is pretty bad. X7 and X8 are mediocre and X7 might even be shitty, but its hard to say. It had some good parts and some bad parts.

I know it goes against the feel of the classic Mega Man games, but I kind of want one that tells the story of Wiley unleashing Zero on the world.

Granted, everyone dies, horribly, at Zero's hands, but still.

You ever read the bobandgeorge.com sprite comic (the grand daddy of sprite comics)? They cover that in an interesting, if albeit entirely too brief way. I would love to see Capcom tackle that though.

I'd play that. I wouldn't pay attention to the story, as usual, but I'd play it!

They'd really have to figure out how to get the speed and response of the sprite games out of the 3D X games if they plan on continuing that series. The transition to 3D was horrible for the series.

MMX is the best MM series IMO. I would kill a man, three children and perhaps some women for a good Mega Man X9 done in the art style of the ZX games, on a console with HD graphics. None of that AWFUL art style from the Zero games. Ugh... i get angry every time I think about MMZero.

I wonder if it's possible to pull a Metroid Prime with this franchise or if Mega Man is doomed to stay pixelated forever. Anyway, hopefully Mega Man won't end up like Sonic... in shitty 3D games, chasing his glorious past.

One of the big things that makes Megaman fun is precision, fast platforming, and that's something that at least so far really hasn't translated well to 3D.

In some ways, the closest thing would be a Quake-like shooter.

His point is that Metroid translated well to 3D, something most probably didn't expect. I didn't. I'm a Mega Man purist and prefer 2D games, but I'd give a MM FPS an honest try. I tried Legends and didn't care for it, but I still tried.

I realize that, I'm just saying that one of the key things about Megaman has so far failed to translate well, so I can understand why we haven't seen a good attempt yet.
