Thirteen years after The Longest Journey launched and six since its sequel Dreamfall, creator Ragnar Tørnquist is returning to the sci-fi-y fantasy-y adventure series. He's formed a new studio, Red Thread Games, and licensed the rights from Funcom to make Dreamfall Chapters, but beyond that it's a bit of a mystery for now.

"I'm very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the 'The Longest Journey' saga," Tørnquist said in the announcement. "Ever since we ended 'Dreamfall' on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible. I'm extremely grateful to Funcom for this unique and exciting opportunity, and I can't wait to dive back into the universe I helped create more than a decade ago, and continue the story players have been waiting for these past six years."

Funcom had no interest in another sequel itself, what with its recent focus on MMOs, so Tørnquist had to strike out on his own. Red Thread will be funding and producing the game on its lonesome, but the licensing agreement means it'll be sharing revenue with Funcom.

Tørnquist explained to Rock, Paper, Shotgun that a Kickstarter is planned, but it has received some arts funding from the Norwegian Film Institute for the pre-production stage too. PC and Mac editions are confirmed, he said, with the prospect of other platforms hazy.

Tørnquist isn't abandoning his last project, Funcom's supernatural MMORPG The Secret World, as he'll still serve as game director.
