Borderlands 2 ships 5 million copies

Borderlands 2 has shipped 5 million copies and had "strong" digital sales, according to a Take 2 earnings report.

21

Borderlands 2 has been a success for publisher 2K Games, appearing high on last month's NPD chart. In Take 2's earnings report, the company revealed that it has shipped 5 million copies at retail.

The numbers are framed as "sold in" figures, so we can't be certain how many of those copies have been sold through to customers. From the company's perspective, though, sales to retailers are what matters most. The report also cited "strong" digital sales, but didn't share specific figures. The same earnings report touted the strong critical reception surrounding XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but didn't cite sales figures for the game.

2K Knocked it out of the park with those two games. Not that they were 100% directly responsible for how great they were, but it's good to be 2K right now. I bought and am thoroughly enjoying both games.

Xcom I understand, but borderlands is by no means a game deserving of that many sales.

        Rofl, I love these comments.

Wasting hundreds of hours on uninteresting and noncompetitive gear grinds that in the end amount to nothing but a few parameters in a save, and then do it all over again once the next expansion-as-sequel+season pass dlc pack+non-season pass dlc comes out that superficially takes the franchise forward a few millimeters.

Hey don't let me stop you from enjoying things that have very little value or depth to my discriminating eyes. I got my money on new ips which may pan out, like dishonored and sleeping dogs, or may not.

Also, in regards to that. You complain about the sequel to Borderlands but then you go on about wanting these games to pan out which I'm assuming means you want then to turn into good franchises which of course means sequels. Evidently you haven't played Borderlands 2 because it was pretty much a fantastic followup to part 1 in every way, other than the UI of course.

I love BL2 and I've had a ton of fun with it, but I think it's fair to say it doesn't deviate too much from the original's formula. (Which is exactly what a lot of people want in a sequel, it's always a hard balance to find.)

There's a lot of stuff I did not like or downright hated in Borderlands 2, but there is some fun to be had in there as well, and it's definitely not an expansion or whatever bullshit you were claiming.

It is disappointing original games aren't selling more period, but Borderlands had gathered fan base from the original release in 2009 so it's not hard to understand that a sequel would perform better and outdo something brand new. Same as how sequels for various franchises did better than the first Borderlands at that time.

If received well, any follow ups to something like Dishonored or Sleeping Dogs will be outselling the next new thing. It's just the way shit goes. It's rare when you see a Minecraft in this industry.

I haven't played much of BL2, beat BL1, and would love to hear from people that have played more actually refuting your argument that BL1 is just more BL2 because I have to kinda agree. I mean besides the Gold Keys and whatnot, what is so drastically different that is warranting this upheaval against what you're saying as if it's outlandish?

it's more of the same good stuff from the first, with less of the bad stuff.

              1) the multiplayer works really well, instead of being busted gamespy shit in the first one
              2) the weapon proficiency system was removed, and replaced with the better bad-ass mechanic
              3) the running-and-gunning gameplay feels good. really good.
              4) more comedy, and better writing.
              5) the world feels more varied.
              6) more to do (tvhm, raid bosses, collectibles to hunt down)

Ahh, so more variety of gameplay, locations, different upgrade system, that all sounds good and thank you for posting that instead of what amounts to "You're dumb, shutup." which brings zilch to the table.

I had just got Platinum on Bl1 a month or so ago, just in time for BL2. Bought it, played 2 levels and it felt so similar and I had just played the total SHIT out of BL1 I just couldn't bring myself to play more just yet. Like eating a whole cake and then someone putting what appears to be a cake in front of you again. It may be badass and different as all get out, I didn't play enough to see yet.

In the end, I loved BL1, will enjoy Bl2 I am sure, thank you for the constructive post.

And I'm sorry, let me say one last thing here, Borderlands 1 was doing things that I can't think of another FPS doing. So if someone wants to champion new styles of gameplay, why are we harping on a sequel to a FPS that brought looting into the fold which is something that no other FPS has matched? It's Diablo in FPS set in a different environment without the AH and other gameplay changes, but the appeal to certain gamers that enjoy that gameplay style should be obvious I would think.

Unless I am wrong, was there another FPS doing what BL1 did with the looting and such?

The PC UI was still garbage, especially the inventory. If they had scaled that stuff down similar to how you adjust could the HUD so more than 5-6 items in the column were on screen at a time, and you didn't have the backpack panel out of focus forcing an extra step in navigating and equipping everything, then it might have been better.

As it is, it's exactly the same as the console UI with mouse support slapped on top. Probably because the game still supports gamepads.
