Halloween is a time for surprises so, with that in mind, boo! Sci-fi FPS-RPG Natural Selection 2 was due to emerge from its leathery egg on that spooky day, but developer Unknown Worlds has announced it is coming early. Only a little, given that Halloween is tomorrow, but it's quite welcome.

NS2 was slated to launch at 12:01 a.m. Pacific on Halloween, 10 years to the day after the launch of the original Natural Selection mod for Half-Life. However, that meant poor limeys such as myself would need to wait until the next morning, missing all the launch night fun. So now it's hatching at around 5 p.m. Pacific today, midnight in the UK, giving us time to squeeze in a few rounds before we drain the dregs of our last cuppa and clamber up those walky-blocks to visit Constable Plod in the Land of Nod.

You now have slightly fewer hours left to pre-order NS2 and score a free upgrade to the Digital Deluxe Edition. Oh no, aliens:

Last chance to pre-order for free digital deluxe version! Comes with soundtrack(awesome) and an exclusive marine skin.

Was about to make a thread about this, the game is fantastic. Noteworthy recent additions:

      - Big performance gains even in the last few weeks, it plays great now both clientside and in the netcode.
      - New map Refinery coming out with the launch: http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2012/10/refinery_reveal
      - Improved infestation just patched last night - still work in progress but getting quite close: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GUuJdL69Wxc
      - Tons of miscellaneous polish and improvements

First review is a 9/10 from AusGamers: http://www.ausgamers.com/games/natural-selection-2/review/

Maybe someday, not currently. Would definitely be nice to have to help fill servers. I know there were some community bot projects but I'm not sure what the status of them is.

I always felt 8v8 was the best minimum. It gets sorta empty with anything smaller.

                6v6.

It's the size used for competitive matches and what most of the strategy and map design is built around. Bigger games are more fun and chaotic, especially for noobs, but the game is designed to be played at 6v6 for a "real" match.

They said the same thing with NS1, 8v8.

We only played 15v15 or 16v16 and they were way WAY better.

These small maps in NS2 disgust me.

Does it still take a quad core+ server to run a NS2 server? I was looking into hosting one and it didn't seem cheap to run.

        -Windows server only
-High server requirements as the animations were all rendered on the server
-No linux server support on the horizon.

Animations rendered on the server? Is this why it movement of enemies seems choppy sometimes? Makes hitting aliens difficult.
