That's the key word-- profession. Journalists are professionals, not merely in the sense that they do journalism for a living, but also that they have formed a broad community or culture that shares a set of ethical standards for conduct within the profession. Of course, there are exceptions and people on the fringe in any profession-- doctors, lawyers, plumbers, and yes, journalists-- but in general a profession has an agreed on set of standards and it polices itself.
Mainstream journalists-- those who work in newspapers, television, radio, and increasing online-- are not only concerned about conflicts of interest. They are also concerned about the *appearance* of a conflict of interest.
I could write on at great length about how mainstream journalists avoid such conflicts (or sometimes fail to do so), but let me simply emphasize the most important point: video games journalism, or whatever you want to call it, is a young profession. So young, in fact, that one may not be able to truly call it that, at least not yet. As a practice, it has not been institutionalized-- games journalists have not come together to create any sort of organization that can codify ethical behavior, at least not successfully. That would be a good first step.

I think you've pointed the finger on one of the main issue in this discussion : videogame journalism is still young.
You're right. but with several recent controversies, I think the time has come for videogame journalist to stop up and raise the bar on several key "ethical" issues :
1. Reviews
The recent examples of Resident Evil 6 and Medal of Honor Warfighter, proves the review system is brocken and needs to fixed quickly. Resident Evil has been punished in reviews ( it has its flaws, but not to the point to call it "unplayable... As it was the case in the show today ) for not being a survival horror. Warfighter has been punished for the poor marketing handling of EA. This is NOT acceptable !
On the other hands, many games like Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, etc. Received perfect scores despite clear design flaws .
I think it's time to have a board of videogames journalists that set up ethical standards on review practices in order to make sure, that reviews can be trusted again.
2. Collusion between the videogame journalists and the game industry.
That was really funny to hear Andrea defending her profession about any wrongdoing in ( and the fact she has never received free PS3... Come on !!! ) and listening her promoting a Halo webseries on her website co-sponsored with Microsoft... I won't say anything else there...
Clearly the ongoing collusion between the videogames journalists and the game industry is a real problem that needs to be address as well. When we see that Gameinformer secured a exclusive coverage of Skyward Sword and just weeks later the game gets a "Perfect Score". That kind of practice should be - at the very least - questionned.
And I will disagree with Garnett point that in order for us readers/listeners to get info on games, videogames journalists needs to accept those practices ( I tknow Garnett you did not say that, but to me it sounds like it ).
So I think indeed that some sort of videogames journalists body needs to exist to ensure that the basic ethical standards are met by the profession.
