Yet more layoffs have been announced in the games industry, this time to Boston-based MMO developer Turbine Inc. The company, best known for the free-to-play games D&D Online and Lord of the Rings Online, had an undisclosed staff reduction confirmed by Warner Bros Interactive.

The news first broke when a Boston jobs recruiter tweeted with reference to layoffs at Turbine today. A spokesperson later confirmed the layoffs to The Boston Globe (via The Escapist).

"As part of the continual review of our business operations and fluctuating market conditions, we have had to make reductions in our Turbine workforce," said spokeswoman Remi Sklar in a statement. "The group continues to remain an integral part of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment."

Before the layoffs, Turbine boasted more than 400 employees. It's unknown how many were affected by the layoffs and how large the studio remains now.

Seems like there's a ton of layoffs lately in general. Is this some financial report thing? Or is it just that all the christmas season games are finished and they're booting everyone due to development cycles?

fiscal year thing, it's that time of year.... also it wasn't a great year for a lot of publishers/devs.

Publishers are still cutting costs anyway they can to save a buck, etc, etc

economy is still pretty shitmode, there's no greater industry growth, at this point, as far as I can tell.

we could really use a new console generation IMO.

Maybe Turbine should of stuck with interesting and fun games like Asheron's Call. When they left that or didn't rework making a new one I knew they were done. They were great at creating lore and content based on stuff they wanted to do world events were fucking awesome. Now they do games where they have no ability to do what made them so awesome.
