Ubisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed 3 is the most pre-ordered game in the company's history--unsurprising given the extraordinary marketing efforts behind the game. According to the publisher, pre-orders for the game are already double that of Ubisoft's previous record holder: last year's Assassin's Creed Revelations. Clearly, this is a franchise that is showing no signs of slowing down.

There are many reasons to account for the sudden interest in Assassin's Creed 3. It is the first numbered entry in the franchise since 2009, which should attract players who skipped the subsequent two Ezio spin-offs. AC3 is also the first game to be made available on a Nintendo home console, introducing its stabby shenanigans to a whole new audience.

The pre-order numbers are especially impressive when you consider there aren't many bonuses to be had for reserving the game early. GameStop does have offer an exclusive single-player level, if that suits your fancy.

Assassin's Creed 3 will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360 next week, on October 30. A Wii U version will follow on November 18. The PC version will be available on November 20.

I'd say the American Revolution setting of AC3 has also attracted a lot of new people to the franchise.

I feel bad for preordering it. Totally not excited. Amazon gave me the "Last chance to preorder!" and I did it. It looks so great. It's just a shame that their yearly quota has burned me out.
