Abrash on X-Box
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 04, 2000 6:34am PDTThere's an lengthy article about the X-Box graphics on Dr Dobb's, written by former id programmer Michael Abrash, who has been working at Microsoft for a few years now. Thanks adam. There's a general article about the graphics (well it has techy terms, but I think any good Shack reader should be able understand most of it :) ), but also a seperate piece about X-Box memory bandwidth something which is important since the GeForce2 right now is pretty much limited by that. Here's a piece about the power of the graphics chip that NVidia will be providing
To put that into easily visualized terms, Quake on a Pentium Pro could draw about three lit player models per frame at 640×480, 60 Hz. Xbox should be able to draw roughly 3000 of the same models per frame, even with a second texture, pixel shading, and antialiasing thrown in for good measure.

name: my pc / xbox

cpu: athlon 800 / p3-733
cache: 128kb l1 + 256kb integrated/ 128kb
ram: 256 mb / 64 mb
dvd: 12-40 / yes
hdd: 45gb / yes
sound: sblive 256 channels / custom 64 channels
gpu: geforce2 sdr / unnamed nvidia
both have: hardware transformation, clipping, lighting, curved surfaces, programmable pixel and vertex shaders, fsaa, ability to pump out an astonishing number of triangles
in what way (except for the price, but look at that pc next year when the xbox comes out) is the xbox better?
a big, big hype about a piece of shit, that doesn't have surround-boxes and subwoofer, keyboard, intellimouse explorer, cdrw-burner, and the ability to add as much stuff as you want to!
and in these days, ppl need a pc anywasy, be it for work, school, or other private stuff (pr0n).
FUCK CONSOLES!!!

The SNES was better than the Genesis. The Genesis was more powerful.
The Playstation was better than the N64, though the N64 was more powerful.
It all comes down to games. You can put all the polygon-pushing power in the world into one box smaller than a VCR, but it doesn't mean anything if the games for it suck.
Another important thing: the controller. (Wah wah wah, keyboard + mouse, blah blah blah...keep in mind that the keyboard/mouse combo isn't the best for ALL games, so the controller is important too.) If I'm to spend any significant amount of time playing on a console, it's controller better not suck (you listening, Nintendo?). I think I heard something about Logitech being chosen to create the controller...well, I like Logitech, but wouldn't a better choice be Gravis? They've been making quality gamepads for a very long time! (/me loves his Gamepad Pro)

Also, the 300mhz chip in the ps2 could beat the living hell out of a p3 733mhz. I'm not exactly sure why they're choosing an x86 processor for the x-box. I guess it might help out compatibility between xbox and pc, but meh.
It'll be interesting to see how powerful the 400mhz gekko processor in the Dolphin is.

Bleem already does a better job of emulating a PSX than the PS2 does. If they can make it work well on the Dreamcast, imagine what they can do on the more powerful hardware in an X-Box....
PSX games in Bleem with real 3D, texturing, and color effects are really nice looking even at 640x480, compared to what you see on the originals or even in the arcase.

The PC does not have ease of use.
But I tell you what, I've been havin' a hell of a good time playing Gauntlet Legends with my buddies and busting insane moves in Crazy Taxi, experiences that you can't quite replicate on a PC.
Now PC has its place, and I love playing online games on my DSL, but to say that consoles are inferior for gaming devices (not that you did), is a silly notion. Consoles aren't about pure power, they're about fun. And hell, they're fun.

"For those who prefer OpenGL, NVIDIA will provide a fully Xbox-enhanced version."
That's good to know, I guess. I don't really care. Show me an X-Box with a keyboard, mouse AND a broadband connection, and maybe then I'll start caring.
