Black Ops: Declassified developer Nihilistic Software is rebranding itself with a new name and a shift from the traditional boxed retail market. The developer plans to focus on downloadable, online, and mobile games.

A note on the company Web site (via Polygon) announced the move, and claims it will be able to make the transition without layoffs or debts. It will leave behind the name "Nihilistic" and instead become "nStigate" in the process. "Over the next couple months we'll get leaner as some of our talent finds new homes, and emerge as a smaller and more focused company."

Nihilistic put most of its focus on PlayStation platforms. In addition to Black Ops for the Vita, the company developed Resistance: Burning Skies and PlayStation Move Heroes.

I did short term contract for them previously. Some of the nicest people and most talent folks I've ever had the privilege of working with. I wish the best for them under this new name.

They get a lot of hate because none of their games are highly rated but it sounds like they were rushed into making a lot of those games
