SimCity trailer is a total disaster

SimCity's new "Disasters" trailer shows just how wrong everything can go if you're not adequately prepared.

Disasters are a vital part of the SimCity series. Reactions to them vary from horror (if you put hard work into your city before having it completely wrecked) to glee (if you're a sadist). Obviously the new SimCity will offer even more detailed tragedies, and a new trailer outlines how to avoid those pitfalls.

The advice is pretty simple: make sure you have police stations, fire stations, and hospitals around. None of these structures prevent the disasters, but they do help you rebuild quickly after a disaster strikes. It really seems like basic law enforcement and disaster response would be pretty high on the "to do" list of any actual city planner, but the concept does give us ample reason to watch terrible things happen to otherwise nice towns. We get a look at earthquakes, meteors, tornadoes, and even a glimpse at UFOs. No giant rampaging monsters, though; they must be saving that for DLC.

With all the thought going into this sim city, why are they still making all disasters random? Shouldn't geography play a part in getting earthquakes or tornados?

geology drives earthquakes. proper climatology to determine tornado susceptibility would be a huge undertaking in itself

Geography does not equal geology. I wouldn't require 100% accurate models of disasters, but there should be parts of the geography that have no to very little chance of earthquakes (they are far from fault lines), and similarly for tornados. Maxis seems to be fine with just setting up distributions on each map--they use it for the water shed and pollution--so why can't they do the same for geography and disasters?

anno 2070 has disaster mitigation. it's an interesting mechanic, but is probably fit only for anno.

To have such mechanics in Sim City you'd have to reduce the scale of the disaster, which is most of their attraction in the first place. Meteors and Godzillas would become riots and the common cold.

how do you see this actually working? there's no terraforming so it's still random, just random based off the random map you got?

I don't know how map selection works, but if I was a mayor, I would want to start a city in a low-risk area.

What the hell is that for a finishing line?
