The Xbox 360 music streaming service will launch tomorrow on the Xbox 360, then on Windows 8 on October 26. The music service aims to combine the features of various types of services together, and will run across multiple devices. It will boast 30 million songs at the start.

The service will let you listen to streaming music for free, subscribe to unlimited music of your choice for a monthly fee, and buy specific songs a la carte. You could compare these services to Pandora, Spotify, and iTunes, respectively. The Music Pass (similar to Spotify) will cost $9.99 per month. The service is coming to Xbox 360 and Windows 8 first, but is aiming to eventually become an App on Android and iOS as well.

"There are a lot of individual services that do a good job, but today there isn't a service which can pull together the benefits of download-to-own, music subscription, or free streaming services," said Microsoft interactive entertainment business marketing VP Yusuf Mehdi in the announcement. "With Xbox Music, what we wanted to do is bring all of that value in one simple, easy-to-use service, then build some additional value on top - make it really beautiful, and have it work across all of your devices. We’ve been able to simplify the music experience in a really powerful way."

I've been saying for a while that Zune was the best kept secret for a long while. It lacked the free streaming/radio option, but other than that it's been a great service. The hardware was the weak link. When they finally support non-Windows platforms, this could be a force in the digital space. I still use my Zune 80gb today.

yeah they need to open it up to Windows 7 at the very least if they want to actually get a foothold. nobody is going to move to Windows 8 just for this.

It's one of the primary reasons I have a Windows phone, and am excited about the new Windows 8 phone that drops soon.

But if they open it up to Win7, they take away a reason *to* upgrade. Don't see that happening.

How is this going to be from Zune Marketplace (which I have subscribed to since forever)?

Zune pass converts to Xbox Music Pass. Zune Marketplace will have access to all the same content, just not the same features - meaning Win7 won't be able to do the radio features.

Haven't read if they'll pull the Zune player downlaods, but I'm sure they won't update it any more.

What do you mean, radio features? Are you referring to the Smart DJ stuff?

If that's the case, then I don't understand unless they're removing the Smart DJ feature from the current Zune client.

Maybe that's why I was unable to use Smart DJ on my phone all weekend, but yet it worked fine on the 360.

Nah, it works like Pandora. I enter in My Bloody Valentine, and get a lot of shoegazey goodness. It's probably not as perfect as Pandora though, because it will play good stuff like Ride and Galaxie 500 and then come out of nowhere with shit like Between the Buried and Me or My Dying Bride because of ... the name?

You'd think they'd undercut spotify, strange. Does this allow downloads?

When they add the iOS app I am sold. That is where I will do 90% of my listening. 10% from my XBox. I prefer that I could do it directly on Win7 but if I can't I will have my phone next to me.

I do the majority at work using the Zune client and Marketplace (for streaming). However, we are ALL about Smart DJ at the house. Smart DJ + the Bonobo channel = instant chill cocktail music.

Just got an e-mail from them saying Zune software will work fine with xbox music and vice versa. I'm hoping that means the software will be staying on Windows 7. They even gave me 1000 points as a gift as well!
