Metro: Last Light drops multiplayer to focus on campaign
by Alice O'Connor, Oct 15, 2012 7:30am PDTSpec Ops: The Line developer Yager recently raged against being forced to include multiplayer in its single-player-focused game, received with whoops and cheers by the peanut gallery. If only more games could go undiluted! Huzzah, then, that Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games has dropped plans for adding multiplayer to Metro 2033's sequel, choosing instead to focus its resources on the single-player campaign.
"Your response to our E3 demo made it very clear that although there was a lot of interest and intrigue around Metro's multiplayer, the single player campaign is what the fanbase cares about the most," 4A explained on its blog (via Joystiq).
4A said that multiplayer never went beyond prototyping, so it had never diverted too much attention from the campaign for it. 4A hinted it "could potentially return" to multiplayer after launch, but "Right now we're 100% focused on the single player campaign and not thinking beyond that."
As for why it planned to make multiplayer in the first place, 4A said, "We are gamers at the studio and really wanted to bring the world of Metro to life in a multiplayer environment. It was a decision made by us at 4A from the outset and THQ have since been supportive every step of the way, including our decision to put multiplayer on hold."
Metro: Last Light is due on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 between January and March of 2013.
