Damned, Dead Space, and Gears of War probably all owe their existence to RE4. That game basically laid out the initial blueprint for a modern 3rd person shooter (that Gears then refined).
By the same token, people have been comparing RE6 to Vanquish, Mikami's most recent shooter that I've heard people call the best 3rd person shooter on the market right now.
Lastly in that regard though, I think people should anticipate Mikami's next game - Project ZWEI, which he has confirmed will be "pure survival horror". He could very well be making an effort to rebirth the genre he popularized.

My issue with RE has been that instead of trying to evolve the series wholesale since that point, they've been stuck between a rock and hard place trying to recreate that experience, but still deliver enough newness to warrant excitement from fans.
Simply put, RE4 took BALLS. It completely redid an existing franchise from scratch - from mechanics, to concept, to lore (albeit, the lore has since been retconned back into Umbrella saga). Capcom hasn't shown any balls since.
They pick and choose a few new mechanics they think might add something without adding SO MUCH that the game doesn't feel like Resident Evil 4 anymore. We'll add cover and co-op to RE5, but we can't add moving and shooting, cause then it wouldn't be RE anymore. We'll add moving and shooting in RE6, but we'll fall back hard on the genre tropes between the massive battle scenes.
It's time somebody at Capcom gave a developer the greenlight to show some balls and say 'Nope, we're doing this from scratch again, and it's NOT going to look like RE 1-3 or 4-6. It's going to be new, different and ambitious.'
When they do that, they may well make the next game that redefines 3rd person gaming again. But not until then.
