League of Legends' new Honor system live. Each summoner should have a cache of honor to hand out, and Riot has issued some guidelines for being a responsible (and honorable) player.

A post on the League of Legends blog explains the details. You'll see a prompt after match-made games to click a green "thumbs up" icon on your own teammates or enemies. Everyone has a limited amount of Honor to give out, and you'll earn more by finishing more match-made games.

"For the average, responsible user, you will probably never run out of Honor," the blog notes. "However, players who spam or trade Honor will soon find themselves with nothing left in the bank to award. If you see players trading Honor, please report them using the 'Spamming' report! Getting punished by the Tribunal for trading Honor or toxic behavior will reset a player's Honor to zero across the board, however Honor can still be re-gained after the punishment has expired."

The blog also points out that Honor is not a currency and doesn't currently give any tangible rewards in the game. It does, however, give users an easy way of telling which players are helpful or respectful, which should make the whole game a bit more pleasant.

I dont quite get the point. If its nothing other than a stat, that does nothing for you, what exactly is the point, other than people knowing if your possibly nicer than others. It doesnt affect match making or anything like that does it?

You are underestimating how much people care about a stat like that

But if you can't exclude people from your matchmaking based upon that stat does it really matter?

Being useless didn't stop the commendation trading in Dota 2, did it?

        It doesn't do anything YET.

Soon you're going to see 'oh btw we've been putting people with no honor and high complaints in their own greifer games' or 'yeah, honorable people get chosen as captain more often' or the like.

but if they do things like that your just asking for it to be abused. Especially for a f2p game, where a new account isnt difficult to make.

            That's pretty easy to prevent

The reason bans have ANY affect in a game like LoL is because people get attached to their account. Or dump tons of money into it. Even if I only had 3 skins, thats like 24 dollars + 40 hours of time i dont want to lose. Yes, there will be people who live to troll and just make greifer accounts and such, but thats not really how people operate in LoL.

It's a good measure in a F2P game to make the account have value to a player. The more you play, the more you are trusted granting you access to better games and rewards.

Sure you could make another free account but now you are back with the dregs.

then you don't understand how the game works, I think.

There have been many times where I wanted to honor someone. I wanted to praise them, and post chat does not cut it.

It's especially true when playing with a wide verity of crappy matchmaking games in Dominion, where maybe 2 of the team will understand the map & the other three want to play it like a classic game, which it is not.

The one that most done see value in is someone harassing their mid. Where if you can contain 2+ opponents there, it really helps the team a lot, but many many people don't & will both complain about it ... if not report them when it's undue.

They might use it to match you with other honorable players and non honorable players get matched with each other.
