Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 PC won't support mods or rental servers

Activision has addressed some Black Ops 2 PC questions, including anti-cheat systems, dedicated servers and matchmaking, server rentals, and mods.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will release for just about every console, but Activision is giving PC players a heads-up with some early, nitty-gritty information. The company recently detailed security measures, matchmaking, and servers for computer players.

A blog post goes through the highlights. For security, Activision touts its own "proprietary server-side anti-cheat technology" to work alongside the Valve anti-cheat system. It also promises more effective player reporting, and a dedicated PC anti-cheat team. "We have a zero tolerance policy on cheating," it says. "Cheaters bans are permanent."

The game will sport both dedicated servers and matchmaking, promising that you can get into public matches or League Play through the matchmaking lobbies. You'll also be able to adjust scorestreaks between matches, and all Public and League matches will be hosted on a dedicated server.

The emphasis on security means the team won't be releasing server files, and players won't be able to rent servers themselves. Finally, the game won't support mod tools. "As we continually improve and advance our in-house tools for our own content teams we are unable to provide consumer tools due to increased technical requirements, licensing restrictions, and technology dependencies," the blog states.

last Black Ops sold on PC, Wii and DS COMBINED 9% of all sales... >_>

dem 200k sales on steam FTW!

Why don't they just make Call of Duty a MMOFPS/subscription game and stop the pretense? It seems like they want to head in that direction any way with elite and developer only servers.

So it'll have dedicated servers but only as long as activision wants to pay for them. That sounds like a wonderful idea!

Glad I dropped this shit after it went to their heads with MW2.

No public dedis, no LAN and no modding = no buy.

It's sad that this will sell a fuckton, just like the last three ones. There are much better FTPs out there, and their devs even have respect for the players.

I'll take this solution over the nonsense servers Black Ops had.

The abundance of "tactical," "No claymore," "No running," "Crouch only," no fun servers in Black Ops was insane.

That's funny the No Crouching No Running servers are the only ones I play on. The regular rooms for me are just too chaotic and not fun.

That's true, I only play when my friend ask me too. I'm not anti COD or anything but the series has become so stale and repetitive that they are no longer on my watch list.

Yah, I have the benefit of never playing any of the CoD games until Black Ops so I'm still not super tired of it.

That's pretty much me. I bought MW2 and didn't like it so I played it for about 2 or 3 weeks trying to make myself like it and then I ended up eventually going to BC2 until BLOPS came out and I split my time between the two. MW3 didn't really grab me...and no one plays HC DOM in BLOPS anymore (my preferred mode) so I've not spent much time there and the past year or so I've been playing mostly BF3 and Tribes Ascend.

Its been so long since I played a CoD game enough to even waste breath or keystrokes mentioning that it doesn't seem all that stale (add to that the fact that I can play the same game over and over for years if its good...I still play the Quakes and I often go back to DOOM).

I'm not sure if another CoD could pull me away from Tribes Ascend though. For all its flaws, T:A is still my favorite game out this year (its one of the FPS games out there these days that even tries to have movement more complicated than "mash down a key and maybe hit shift to sprint because holding two keys down is some hard shit man"...its not the perfect successor to Tribes...but as a game its easily my favorite released this year).

I meant "sounds like"...damned tablet keyboard...I decided to type THIS post on a real fucking keyboard.

BLOPS felt a lot less laggy and a lot more stable to me once I got in a game than MW2 or MW3 ever did...and I could adjust my FOV so it didn't look like dog vomit on cardboard. I just haven't enjoyed any of the IW games since CoD4...I tried to enjoy MW2 but I hated it...and even though I wasn't a big W@W fan I found that I really liked CoDBLOPS...and then I found that I hated MW3...so I'll give BLOPS2 a try.

So just to clarify things this is basically authorized ISPs around the world hosting the servers that Activision pays for on the PC? They will be ranked?

I don't think these will be Game Server Providers like what EA uses for Battlefield. They pretty much already excluded the possibility of being able to rent servers. Its probably more about control of the game and planned obsolescence than it is about preventing cheaters/hackers.

Hmm I gave up on COD a while back for BF3 on PC. Make graphics better than BF3 on PC and I might give COD another try.
