Steam Linux closed beta launching in October
If you're waiting for the Year of the Linux Desktop to begin, take a deep breath and cross your fingers. Valve said yesterday that "Things have been going well" for its Steam Linux client, so it plans to launch an internal beta next week then an invite-only external beta for 1,000 Linuxnauts in October.

Valve said yesterday that "Things have been going well" for its Steam Linux client, so it plans to launch an internal beta next week then an invite-only external beta for 1,000 Linuxnauts in October.
Valve's Linux team explains that the beta will support Ubuntu 12.04 and above, offering Steam and one unspecified Valve game. That may be Left 4 Dead 2, as it was the testbed game for Source on Linux, but who knows, it could be a surprise.
It won't, however, include Big Picture mode or any other Valve games.
Keep your eyes peeled for signups, though Valve's ideally looking for seasoned Linux users.

Linux people, enlighten me here.
Games generally run better on Linux, right? I would imagine so because there are less memory hogging processes running than in windows.-

Isn't windows 7 a memory hog though?

Uses less than Vista (or at least better), not really an issue when you've got more than 4GB though.

Games CAN run better under Linux but I think what Linux gaming is really missing is the better drivers for Nvidia and AMD's video cards when compared to Windows.
Steam wrote a post about how they were able to get a more frames per second under Linux than Windows for a build they but together. It really depends on a bunch of stuff, but yes all things being equal I would say the linux version should work better, -........ but too many times developers treat Linux as an afterthought and do not commit many resources to making it work just the same.
Hopefully this push to Linux by Steam more consumers will give linux gaming a shot and in turn attract more developers to creating better linux games.
I cant wait to build my first PC and put Linux on it and do some linux gaming.
