PlayStation 3 starts 'Day 1 Digital' for retail games

Sony has kicked off a "Day 1 Digital" initiative, offering eight high-profile games through the PlayStation Store on the same day they hit retail stores.

Sony has been taking steps into the digital market recently, selling full retail games on the PlayStation Store and even offering some as PlayStation Plus bonuses. But most of these have been older releases, and today the company took the next logical step in its digital push with a new "Day 1 Digital" initiative.

The PlayStation Blog details the move. Through October, eight high-profile releases will hit the PlayStation Store the same day as retail.

The eight games on tap are Resident Evil 6, NBA 2K13, Dishonored, Doom 3: BFG Edition, 007 Legends, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and Assassin's Creed 3. Several are available for pre-order starting today, and some include discounts for Plus members.

Presumably, the deeper push into digital releases won't stop with October, so we'll see another round of games coming in the busy November release month. Now if Sony just starts offering pre-loading for the games, we'd really be getting somewhere.

It's a great idea. If microsoft would do this with new releases I would be sold. As long as they were sold for the normal price of £39.99 and not £50 like some games (Halo reach, Ninja Gaiden 2?).

I can hear my wallet crying now. Wish Microsoft would do this as well.

I'm sure that with Nintendo and Sony openly committed to digital, Microsoft won't be far behind.

Still way overpriced imo. I'm a PC gamer, but I also have a PS3... sure, PC is more expensive, but I don't have a radio, tv, magazine subscription or anything and I build a new PC once every 5+ years (current rig is going on 7 years old). When I have an all purpose media center and buy games off Steam for $5-$10 I'm saving 75% off of games consolers are paying for. I guess what I'm saying is get back with me when games are at that price on consoles.

Wow, Nintendo is actually leading the way on digital distribution in consoles, who'da thunk it.

Nintendo doesn't get enough credit, there's a lot of haters out there.

Like how every post has people lambasting the Wii U as weak and outdated when it's been confirmed to have 4 times the RAM and a much better graphics card than the 360 or PS3.

This probably is the only way they'll ever see me buying more than a couple console titles a year again. I always buy PC when I can, even though I have both the PS3 and the 360. Out of the console exclusives, I only buy the ones I really, really want to play. The main reason for this is the convenience of Steam, not so much the technical superiority of the PC, even though that's also a factor naturally.

If, say, I were to boot up my PS3 for the first time in months some day now and saw some new couch-friendly title available as a download, I just might hit the buy button, as opposed to the fact that the mere idea of me going to a retailer and "browsing something to buy" for either of my consoles is far fetched at best these days.

They're tryin to jump the gun before Steams console comes out which will undoubtably do just this.

Strange, I figured MS would be first to market here. I wonder how they are going to keep GameStop from pulling all PS3s off the shelves?

They dont' have to, ISPs will cap the bandwidth for them. Imagine pulling a couple of 35GB (likely much more next gen) games down will cause all sorts of overages.
