Modders recreating Morrowind in Skyrim engine

A group of modders have released the first screenshots of their efforts to recreate The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in the Skyrim engine.

The Skyrim mod community has already added tons of new weapons, spells, and other knick-knacks for your playing pleasure. But an intrepid group of modders heard you like Elder Scrolls, so it's putting Elder Scrolls in your Elder Scrolls so you can play Elder Scrolls while you play Elder Scrolls. More specifically, the "Skywind" project plans to inject a healthy dose of Morrowind using the Skyrim engine.

So far the fruits of their labor have produced a handful of early shots and videos on the Morroblivion forums (via PC Gamer). If you'd like to help out, the team is currently looking for volunteers. In the long term, the modders hope to bring Oblivion into the world as well, presumably resulting in one giant Tamriel and rendering The Elder Scrolls Online completely pointless.

      Awesome.

Didn't they already recreate Morrowing on Oblivion engine? Or they want to spend another 5 years redoing it again with slightly enhanced graphics?
Not trying to hate on modders just curious is if it's really worth the enormous effort.

I know that I've seen many videos of Morrowind mods which made it look very pretty.. but I can't remember if it was actually using the Oblivion engine. I wouldn't be surprised though... Morrowind seems to have a pretty intense following.

There's a mod for Morrowind that makes it look really awesome, to the point where it seems kind of useless to port this over.

I've never seen any mods that make all the very old and stiff/blocky looking models better. Yeah, there's plenty to make the environments more pleasant, but the characters and monsters are all busted looking.

which reminds me: Have there been any Doom mods that make the weapons and sprites look better? Last time I looked (years back) the weapon animations were still CGA resolution :)

IIRC, there's Doom mods that add polygon-based models instead of sprites, but I've never used them.

Yeah, check out ZDoomGL, it's quite old, but it has replaced all the sprites with with OpenGL models.

ZDoomGL looks surprisingly good actually even though the environments are basically boxes with textures on them.

I think you probably mean GZDoom. I haven't worked on ZDoomGL in years.

there are source ports that make doom look fucking amazing. stay away from the models though, the last model pack is pretty old and models never age like sprites.

i am partial to Jdoom, but most folks like Zdoom just fine. Jdoom makes hexen look especially great with all the lighting and spells.

wow, its hard to try to explain just how far doom source ports have come. if you honestly have no knowledge of them its hard to encompass the incredible dedication and work that have gone into it for the past 2 decades. no other game has received the community love and attention that doom has.

Gotta love Morrowind's beautiful soundtrack. The lovely sky from Skyrim compliments it nicely.

      I wished they'd showed Balmora/Vivec/Tel Vos/Sadrith Mora rather than Ald'ruhn, though.

Problem with this thing ain't recreating the landscapes or cities, it's all about making it interesting enough to warrant the player to stay.

And as much as I love Morrowind, I don't particularly want to have the island as a big walking park.
